The First Responder Network Authority (FirstNet) was established by the Middle Class Tax Relief and Job Creation Act of 2012 as an independent authority within the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) under the Department of Commerce. FirstNet will deploy and operate a nationwide public safety broadband network.
FirstNet's responsibilities include network design, ensuring nationwide standards for use and access of the network, establishment of provider agreements, infrastructure construction, equipment deployment and issuing open, transparent, and competitive requests for proposals to build, operate, and maintain the network.
