2016 Updates from Olympia
In the 2016 legislative session, LYAC supported two bills. The first bill we supported, HB 1682, a bill based on improving educational outcomes for homeless students through increased in-school guidance supports, housing stability, and identification services, was signed by Governor Inslee on April 1st and will be going into effect on June 1st. The other two bills we supported, HB 2214, a bill geared towards increasing academic rigor and streamlining standardized assessment requirements for high school students, and SB 5526, a bill written to prevent harassment, intimidation, and bullying in public schools, were not signed in this year’s session.

Our lawmakers in Olympia agree that the distinct needs of young people in Washington must be a priority. LYAC was created in 2005 to help legislators address these needs through the direct input of Washington’s youth.
We meet up to six times per year in locations around Washington, and every year we hold a Youth Action Day in Olympia in to meet with legislators, testify on bills, and give a voice to Washington youth by advocating for youth.
