President James K. Polk

U.S. President – Mexican American War

This site is located on land once owned by the parents of James K. Polk, the 11th U.S. president. The state historic site commemorates significant events in the Polk administration: the Mexican-American War, settlement of the Oregon boundary dispute, and the annexation of California. Reconstructions of typical homestead buildings a log house, separate kitchen, and barn are authentically furnished. The visitor center features a film on Polk's life and exhibits on his family and tumultuous presidency.

Upcoming Events

  • November 24 - 25:
    Due to the Thanksgiving holiday, our site will be closed Thursday and Friday, November 24th and 25th. We will reopen at 9 am Saturday, November 26th.


  • December 3:
    Holiday Tunes with Julie Harris and the Myers Park Consort

    Saturday, 10 am - 12:30 pm
    During this family program, the Myers Park Consort, led by harpist and singer Julie Harris, will play a variety of historical and modern holiday tunes. The Consort will feature a number of historical instruments, including the dulcimer and the bouzouki. The Consort will also provide historical context centering on the music and instruments they feature. This event is free, and open to the general public.


  • December 10:
    Story Time with Dr. MacDonald

    Saturday, 10:30 am - 1:30 pm
    Dr. Martha MacDonald will share holiday stories and tales to children and families. Dr. MacDonald's stories will range from folk tales, historical stories, and a diverse array of holiday stories. This story time will be interactive, and will include songs and character role play.
