During their service in the Philippines, Volunteers learn to speak local languages, including Bicol-Albay, Bicol-Naga, Cebuano, Hiligaynon, Kinaray-a, Sorsoganon, Tagalog, and Waray-Waray. More than 8,975 Peace Corps Volunteers have served in the Philippines since the program was established in 1961.
