SR-101 Pima to Gilbert Rd - Addition of new eastbound and westbound HOV lanes TRAC # H705801
RTP Phase 1 Project Description The project constructed over six miles of HOV lanes in the median of Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway) between Loop 101 and Gilbert Road. In addition to the eastbound and westbound HOV lanes, a concrete median barrier was constructed, median lighting was added and the new lanes were paved with rubberized asphalt to match existing lanes.
Project Benefits There are now HOV lanes on Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway) starting at the Mini-Stack near downtown Phoenix extending east into Mesa. HOV lanes improve traffic flow, encourage carpooling and expand the regional transit network. Vehicles carrying two or more occupants, Valley Metro buses, certified alternative-fuel vehicles, motorcycles and emergency vehicles can use HOV lanes from 6 to 9 a.m. and 3 to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday. All vehicles can use HOV lanes at all other times.
