Dear Neighbor,

The California Legislature recently concluded its 2015-2016 session with several key bills to improve conditions and wages for workers, provide more access to higher education, increase affordable housing and protect the environment.

For the second straight year, Governor Jerry Brown signed all of my bills that were approved by the Legislature. In this update, I am highlighting some of those bills so you can learn how my work and accomplishments are making a positive difference in the lives of California residents.

Awardees from Alameda, Santa Clara counties will be honored

Santa Clara – State Senator Bob Wieckowski (D-Fremont) will recognize three Latino leaders and the volunteers of an Alameda County non-profit organization who focus on housing, education, youth and social services at his 4th Annual Latino Heritage Leadership Awards Ceremony at 3 p.m., Friday, October 7 in the Santa Clara City Council Chambers, 1500 Warburton Avenue, Santa Clara.

SB 1263 limits the proliferation of small public water systems that are more likely to violate safety standards

Sacramento – Governor Jerry Brown today signed a bill by Senator Bob Wieckowski (D-Fremont) to protect the quality of California drinking water by limiting the proliferation of small, unsustainable public water systems that are more likely to violate drinking water safety standards.  The bill, SB 1263, is supported by a number of statewide environmental organizations.

Sacramento – State Senator Bob Wieckowski’s (D-Fremont) bill to reduce the barriers California homeowners face when seeking to build an accessory dwelling unit (granny flat) on their property will take effect this January after Governor Jerry Brown signed the bill today.  Senate Bill 1069 is the most extensive bill on accessory dwelling units to be signed in almost 15 years.  The Governor signaled his support for the bill in principle during his revise of the state budget in May.

SB 998 will help AC Transit, VTA with bus-only lanes

Sacramento – Governor Jerry Brown signed a bill by Senator Bob Wieckowski (D-Fremont) today that will improve the ability of bus rapid transit (BRT) services to move riders more quickly through heavily travelled corridors.

SB 998 amends the vehicle code to authorize transit agencies to cite motorists who are inappropriately using the bus-only lanes and obstructing the operation of BRT service.
