The Washington state departments of Labor & Industries, Employment Security, and Revenue investigate reports of business or worker fraud and refer the most serious cases to prosecutors.
Businesses that don’t play by the rules may shortcut the quality of their work, resulting in unhappy consumers and shoddy – if not unsafe - outcomes. They also undercut law-abiding businesses, creating an illegal and underground economy.
Things to consider
- Is the business currently registered in Washington?
- Are construction contractors appropriately registered, licensed and bonded?
- Is the business providing its employees with workers’ compensation insurance?
- What’s the business’s safety inspection history?
