Native Alaskan Consultation

The Joint Project Office will consult with Native governments regarding the TAPS renewal process.

The Bureau of Land Management and the State of Alaska work on a government-to-government basis with Alaskan Native Tribes. The government-to-government relationship was formally recognized by the state government on September 29, 2000, with Alaska Administrative Order No 186 and by the federal government on November 6, 2000 with Executive Order 13175.

The BLM coordinates and consults with tribal governments, Native communities, and individuals whose interests might be directly and substantially affected by renewing the right-of-way grant. BLM strives to provide the tribes a sufficient opportunity for productive participation in BLM planning and resource management decision making. It is the policy of the State of Alaska to recognize, respect, and work with the governmental status of the federally recognized Tribes within the boundaries of Alaska.

The JPO consults with Native governments regarding the TAPS renewal process. JPO met with tribal governments during public scoping and will continue to seek meetings throughout the preparation of the TAPS EIS. Issues raised during these meetings will be considered in the TAPS right-of-way renewal process.
