Welcome to Section 334

The Radar Science & Engineering Section is JPL's center for radar instrument development for Earth and planetary science missions. For over 40 years, Section 334 has led NASA's activities in radar mission concept development through flight project implementation and operations. Section 334 teams work collaboratively with other sections and with industry to develop one-of-a-kind radar instruments, systems, and missions to explore the Earth and our solar system, including the following:

The nature of radar remote sensing, in particular the physics and phenomenology of scattering of coherent radiation from macroscopic objects and how science requirements map into radar instrument requirements, is complex and specialized. As a result, Section 334 has a staff with a fully integrated set of capabilities, including discipline scientists, system engineers, component and subsystem technologists, flight hardware designers and developers, and algorithm and application developers. Section 334 staff members are entirely co-located in JPL’s Building 300. Offices around the perimeter of the building encircle flight hardware labs, technology labs, and a computing facility.

Section 334 members are prolific in submitting Principal Investigator-led research proposals in science and technology, as well as forming larger teams to propose instruments and missions. The section is actively engaged with the national and international science and engineering communities to develop ideas and partnerships. Research proposals that are funded are managed directly by PIs in the section, often in collaboration with university or industry partners. Larger efforts, such as major space instrument development, involve collaborations outside the section. The section has a strong commitment to publication of research and actively advocates participation in national and international conferences.
