Overview
Donner Memorial State Park commemorates those who emigrated to California in the mid 1800's, including the ill-fated Donner family. Located along the south side of Donner Lake, the park features camping, picnicking, and trails. It is off route 80 at the west side of the town of Truckee on the south side of the freeway. Elevation is around 7,000 feet. Visitors should be aware of how high altitude may affect them. Phone (530) 582-7892 for more information.

Camping
Ridge Campground: Three designated accessible campsites are available (#20, #28, #30). Two combination restroom/shower buildings in this campground are accessible. The route from the road to the restrooms is accessible. The campfire center, located across from campsite #20, is accessible.

Creek Campground: Four designated accessible campsites are available (#53, #60, #73, #79). Two combination restroom/shower buildings in this campground are accessible. The route from the road to the restrooms is accessible.

Splitrock Campground: Two accessible campsites are available (#115, #124). Two combination restroom/shower buildings in this campground are accessible. Paved level parking spaces are adjacent to the restrooms. Routes from the campsites to the restrooms are accessible.

Picnic Area
Picnic tables are strung along the south shore of the lake. One such area just before China Cove Beach includes two tables on asphalt pads and paths that may be somewhat usable. One offers wheelchair users only 16" deep knee space under the table. A second table is similar but the knee space is only 22" high. A designated accessible portable restroom is at least usable. Designated accessible parking available for one auto is usable.

Trails
The Lakeside Interpretive Trail is a 1.4 mile accessible trail along the south shore of Donner Lake. The trail offers great views of the lake and access to shoreline recreation such as beaches and picnicking. Accessible parking and restrooms are available at the museum building and China Cove parking lots. The trail is constructed of compacted soil and is usable year-round except when obstructed by snow.

Accessible Trail Connections to Camping: accessible trail connectors are available to accessible campsites in both the Splitrock and Ridge Campgrounds. Accessible restrooms and water are also located in the campground.

The Ridge Campground to Lakeside Trail is accessible for 0.13 mile.

The Splitrock Campground to Lakeside Trail is accessible for 0.26 mile.

Beach/Shore Access
A beach wheelchair is available. Check in with staff at the park entrance or phone (530) 582-7892 to reserve a beach wheelchair.

Exhibits/Programs
A new 9000 square foot Visitor Center opened to the public in June of 2015. This fully accessible state-of-the-art facility includes compelling new exhibits that feature stories of the Emigrant Experience, the Land of the Washoe, Chinese construction of the railroad, and early motoring adventures over Donner Pass. The Multipurpose Theater includes state-of-the-art audiovisual systems for presentations. An expanded information center welcomes visitors with interactive kiosks for exploring connections to other state parks. A spacious museum store provides keepsakes for visitors young and old. Improvements to the landscape include an accessible paved walk to the Pioneer Memorial, the path taken by the Donner Party and other emigrants.
