The Breast Cancer Surveillance Consortium (BCSC) was established in 1994 to enhance the understanding of breast cancer screening practices in the United States and their relation to changes in stage at diagnosis, survival, or breast cancer mortality. Originally funded through a grant mechanism, the BCSC is a collaborative network of seven mammography registries with linkages to tumor and/or pathology registries and supported by a Statistical Coordinating Center. From 2010-2016, the Healthcare Delivery Research Program funded a contract with the BCSC to establish it as a research resource that could be used by external investigators and new collaborators. As of the end of the contract period, the database included data from 1994-2009 on more than 2.3 million women with 9.5 million mammograms and included 95,000 breast cancer cases, 4,700 ovarian cancer cases and 180,000 breast biopsies. Other data about demographics, risk factors, clinical history, vital statistics, tumor registry and pathology labs, mammography exam, and facilities were also included. BCSC data have been used in over 500 publications to assess mammography performance, breast cancer risk factors, clinical practice patterns, and disparities. Both internal and external collaborators who have used these data span a range of expertise including clinicians, radiologists, pathologists, epidemiologist, health services researchers, and biostatisticians.
