This is to notify you that the IRWIS data management tool will no longer be available effective July 14, 2015. IWRIS was a web based GIS application that allowed one to access, integrate, query, and visualize multiple sets of data. The tool was released as a beta site in 2008. Since that time IWRIS has not been updated while technology has advanced. The key operating system (OS) component supporting the IWRIS system will be at end of life on July 14, 2015. This means that any request for OS support or updates will no longer be available. Thus, support for the IWRIS solution is no longer sustainable and the availability of IWRIS will also end on July 14, 2015.
Since IWRIS was released to the public, other tools and web pages have been developed that access information that was available through IWRIS. Listed below are some of those websites and tools.
DWR Groundwater Information Center

The Groundwater Information Center is DWR's portal for groundwater information, groundwater management plans, water well basics, and statewide and regional reports, maps and figures.
Groundwater Information Center Interactive Map

The Groundwater Information Center Interactive Map is a web based application that allows one to view individual geospatial or Geographic information Systems (GIS) layers of groundwater related information and download these as GIS shape files (file extension .shp).
California Statewide Groundwater Elevation Monitoring (CASGEM)

In 2009, the Legislature passed SBX7 6, which established, for the first time in California, collaboration between local monitoring parties and DWR to collect groundwater elevations statewide and make that information be made available to the public.
Groundwater data can be accessed via the CASGEM Online system and the Water Data Library. Tools on both sites provide different ways to access the same database.
CASGEM Online System – Public Portal

Public users can view Monitoring Entities, monitored groundwater basins and wells, and groundwater elevation data, through reports, search tools, and GIS viewing by accessing the Public User Login to the Online System.
Water Data Library (WDL)
http://www.water.ca.gov/waterdatalibrary/
WDL contains hydrologic data (groundwater level data and some groundwater quality data) for over 35,000 wells California. The data is collected by DWR Region Offices and dozens of local and federal cooperators. WDL's easy on-line data retrieval provides information quickly!
Groundwater Basin Prioritization

The CASGEM Groundwater Basin Prioritization is a statewide ranking of groundwater basin importance that incorporates groundwater reliance and focuses on basins producing greater than 95% of California’s annual groundwater. The results are a statewide assessment and the statewide findings are not intended to diminish the local importance of the smaller size or lower-use groundwater basins.
Water Management Planning Tool

In February 2015, DWR released a web-based application to assist local agencies view boundaries important to water management planning efforts. The Water Management Planning Tool is an interactive map application that allows users to overlay numerous Geographic Information Systems (GIS) layers onto a map of California, and allows for those GIS layers to be toggled on and off while varying each layer's transparency.

- What is IWRIS?
IWRIS is a data management tool for water resources data. It is a web based
GIS application that allows you to access, integrate, query, and visualize
multiple sets of data. Some of the databases include DWR Water Data Library,
California Data Exchange Center (CDEC), USGS streamflow, Local Groundwater
Assistance Grants (AB303), and data from local agencies.

IWRIS is a one stop shop for state-wide water resources information management system. It integrates multi-disciplinary data to support Integrated Regional Water Management (IRWM). IWRIS increases efficiency in data download and dissemination of useful information through flexible, expandable, and user customization functionalities.

IWRIS has been updated with four new GIS layers and a new feature that allows a user to download Bulletin 118 Groundwater Basin Descriptions in a PDF format. Select the "Quick Tips" tab to learn more. The new GIS layers include areas managed under a Groundwater Management Plan (GWMP), statewide topography, and Proposition 50 Planning Grants. To make use of these new layers, you will have to add them to your layer library first. For the instructions on how to add layers go to "Online Help" tab, click on "Quick Start" link and click on "Add a New Layer or Group" link. To access topography, zoom in to an area at a scale of at most 1:24000 and the topography will be automatically displayed on the map. To search for a location by name, utilize the "GNIS" tool located on the left tool panel. The GWMPs areas layer contains only GWMPs areas submitted to DWR.

Now that you are ready to see what IWRIS can do for you, use the following Start-Up Checklist to make sure:
Using Internet Explorer version 6 or newer
Turned off pop-up blockers from Internet Explorer and from other tool bars such as Google and Yahoo

Checked that the monitor is set to the recommended screen resolution of 1024 x 768
Logging on IWRIS: Once the registration process is complete, make sure you are using Internet Explorer as your browser and be sure to check all pop-up blockers are disabled (turned off). IWRIS will not open if pop-ups are blocked when you are accessing IWRIS. Pop-up blockers can exist from Internet Explorer as well as Google and Yahoo tool bars. If you are at the registration page and it brings back the login and password prompt repeatedly, then it indicates you still have a pop-up blocker that needs to be turned off. For a successful loading of IWRIS, a pop-up window will open up containing a disclaimer/warning of the public beta version of IWRIS GIS display. Click ok to load IWRIS in your machine. If the pop-up window does not open, make sure that you have enabled pop-ups in your web browser by following the directions provided under "Getting Started" tab.
There is additional troubleshooting information at the end of the "Online Help" section. The link to the Online Help section is available under the links on the left hand side of the IWRIS homepage (www.iwris.water.ca.gov) and the last tab in the body of the IWRIS homepage.
Keep in mind that transferring map data over the Internet takes time and too many fast clicks may slow or hang up the system.
- Quick Tips
Bulletin 118 Groundwater Basin Descriptions: IWRIS has been updated with a new feature that allows downloading B118 Groundwater (GW) Basin Descriptions as PDF documents. To download one or more B118 GW Basin Descriptions, place your mouse over the "GW Basins (B118)" layer label until it is highlighted green, left click on it and select "Download PDF". See the image below on your left for clarification and click on it to view and download B118 GW Basin Descriptions.
Graphing hydrographs for multiple water wells: IWRIS allows you to select multiple groundwater wells and view water elevation data from the Water Data Library. Hold down the Ctrl key and click to select wells of interest. Once selected, click on the "Update" button to generate the groundwater elevation hydrograph for the stations selected on the map. See the image below on your right for clarification and click on it to enlarge and view the multiple hydrographs. Although IWRIS will graph many hydrographs, selecting several with lots of data may affect computer performance.
- Online Help
The Online Help is intended to provide brief answers to questions you may on how to navigate through the IWRIS system and covers several topics that include logging on; explanation of the interface; how to find metadata; locating groundwater basin descriptions and Groundwater Management Plans; accessing Water Data Library, CDEC and other databases for data, hydrographs, and other available information; and troubleshooting.
The Quick Start link provides a quick overview of some of the key features of IWRIS.
The My IWRIS function allows you to customize the graphical user interface on the web and save it under your profile. The GIS features in IWRIS are accessed via the layers. You can define different layer lists to address your individual needs and save them under a theme.
The IWRIS User Interface contains twenty-one Map Tools and uses standard buttons in GIS. This section describes the Map Tools found on the IWRIS User Interface Left Panel.
The IWRIS Layer List is a comprehensive list of sortable layers in IWRIS. Users can also find the list of new layers that have been added to IWRIS. You can sort the layer list alphabetically by clicking on any of the column headings. Double clicking will sort the list in reverse alphabetically.
The Quick Tips link provides you with tips of some of the features of IWRIS.
