Interstate 10: Riverside Avenue Interchange, Rialto

The Interstate 10 Riverside Avenue Interchange Project, locally referred to as “the Riverside bridge project,” started construction in March 2010 and ended with a special “treat” on October 31 – the opening of the bridge to drivers 15 days earlier than scheduled.

The project included the widening of the bridge from five lanes to nine lanes, and expanding the on-ramps and off-ramps from single lanes to multi-lanes. In addition, Riverside Avenue was widened between the freeway and Valley Boulevard to improve the overall operation of the interchange. Retaining walls and improved drainage systems were also built.

The centerpiece of the project was construction of the bridge itself. In an effort to minimize the long-term impacts to the community, the Rialto City Council made the decision to close the entire bridge to streamline the overall construction timeframe. Unlike “staged construction,” in which the contractor demolishes a section of the bridge and rebuilds it while the remaining section is open to drivers for about a two-year period, this project used a full bridge closure and completed the bridge reconstruction itself in six months. The bridge was closed from April 27, 2011 to October 31, 2011.

The City of Rialto, San Bernardino Associated Governments and the California Department of Transportation appreciate the patience of drivers and business operators during the bridge closure and hope that everyone will enjoy the newly completed bridge and its benefits to the community.
