About Water Use Efficiency

• Provides expertise to local agencies and individuals regarding agricultural and urban water and energy conservation, reclamation and reuse of water, land and water use, and drainage management.
• Manages the California Irrigation Management Information System (CIMIS), which collects data from over 140 automated weather stations throughout the State. CIMIS provides reference evapotranspiration (ETo) and weather data to the public for irrigation scheduling and other purposes such as water balance analyses, pest management, energy generation, fire fighting, weather forecasting, and scientific research.
• Assists in establishing mobile laboratories that conduct irrigation system evaluations.
• Carries out data analysis, demonstration projects, and research to achieve energy and water use efficiency.
• Provides loans and grants to make more efficient use of water and energy resources.

The California Department of Water Resources (DWR) has two new rebate programs to help Californians replace inefficient toilets and tear out water-guzzling lawns, further conserving water during the state’s historic drought.

The “turf and toilet” rebate program is financed by the Proposition 1 water bond approved by voters in 2014. The program will help carry out Governor Brown’s April 1 Executive Order on drought to further reduce water use in homes by replacing more than 10 million square-feet of lawn and upgrading more than 60,000 water-wasting toilets.

DWR will oversee the two rebate programs, which provide a $100 consumer rebate to replace one old toilet per household and up to $2 per square foot for lawn replacement. Californians can visit www.SaveOurWaterRebates.com to apply for the rebates.

2015 Agricultural Water Management Plans

There are an estimated 54 agricultural water suppliers that meet the 25,000 acre threshold that are required by SB X7-7 to adopt water management plans by December 31, 2015, and submit them to DWR no later than January 31, 2016. State water suppliers are required to submit new plans, whereas Bureau of Reclamation contractors may submit their updated addendums.

There are an estimated 42 agricultural water suppliers that provide water 10,000 to 25,000 irrigated acres. Executive Order B-29-15 of April 1, 2015, requires these water suppliers to adopt and submit their water management plans to DWR no later than July 1, 2016. State water suppliers are required to submit new plans, Bureau of Reclamation contractors may submit their latest water conservation plans and addendums.

There are estimated to be 439 urban water agencies that are required to submit water management plans.
