Utah Certified Public Manager® Program

The Utah Certified Public Manager ® Program increases the professional performance of current and future government managers. Certified Public Manager® is a professional designation granted by nationally accredited programs in state and federal governments. The CPM Program increases the capacity of its participants to effectively lead people, manage work processes and develop self mastery. The Utah CPM Program is co-sponsored by the Utah Department of Human Resource Management and the Utah System of Higher Education.

What will I learn and accomplish in CPM?

Utah’s CPM curriculum incorporates core competencies as outlined by the National CPM Consortium. To review the core competencies click on Course Catalog or access the CPM Handbook

Participants are directed toward performance outcomes. When you enter a CPM course, you can expect to gain knowledge and achieve results that increase your professional capacity and experience. Click on Performance Outcomes to see what you will accomplish in the Utah CPM Program.

When and Where are the next classes?

A full schedule of classes is offered in Salt Lake City starting every January, April and September. Click on Schedule to access the Class Locations and Course Schedules. Web-based courses run concurrently with live classes and can be accessed anywhere via internet. Classes can be arranged anywhere in Utah when there is sufficient demand. If you are interested in participating in a course outside of Salt Lake County in the future, please contact JJ Acker at jacker@utah.gov or (801)664-0364 or ucpm@utah.gov. Please indicate which course you are interested in and location preference.

How much does it cost?

The cost of the program is $750 per course in Salt Lake, Utah, Davis, Summit, Tooele and Weber Counties and for all web-based courses. Classes offered in other counties are $850 per course. Certification (completion of all 3 courses) will total $2,250-$2,550, depending on location.

Who are the Instructors?

CPM instructors are experienced practitioners who understand adult learners’ need for experiential learning and practical application. Click on Instructors for a brief introduction.

How are courses organized?

  • Each course is organized into modules. See the Module Descriptions.
  • Performance Outcomes define the practical learning tasks students can expect to accomplish in each module of the Utah CPM program.
  • Experience a variety of instructors. During the quarter students may experience several different instructors who facilitate specific modules rather than entire courses. See Instructors to learn more about the program instructors.
  • CPM certification requires completion of the three core courses plus elective credits within a five year time period. See the CPM Elective Credit Forms within the Course Catalog for more detail.
