File Transfer Protocol (FTP)

PO.DAAC's datasets are accessible via our anonymous FTP server.

OPeNDAP

Open-source Project for a Network Data Access Protocol (OPeNDAP) Version 1.12.2

OPeNDAP enables remote datasets to be accessed through familiar data analysis and visualization packages, just as if they resided locally on the user's machine. OPeNDAP handles transport, translation and subsetting of data residing in most Earth science data formats. For a list of PO.DAAC data accessible through OPeNDAP, see PO.DAAC OPeNDAP data.

THREDDS.jpg

Thematic Realtime Environmental Distributed Data Services (THREDDS)  Version 4.6.3

THREDDS Data Server (TDS) is a web server that provides metadata and data access for scientific datasets, using a variety of remote data access protocols (i.e.: OPeNDAP, OGC WMS and WCS, HTTP, etc.)

Webservices image

Web Services Version: 3.2.2

PO.DAAC Web Services are application programming interfaces (APIs) that can be accessed through standard web protocols.  The W3C defines a Web Service in part as, "A software system designed to support interoperable machine-to-machine interaction over a network," (for the full definition, see http://www.w3.org/TR/ws-arch/#whatis ). The PO.DAAC Web Services use a Representational State Transfer (REST) model with calls issued over a Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) connection.  On receipt of a request message, our services return the response in either an Extensible Markup Language (XML) structure or, optionally, a JavaScript Object Notation (JSON) format.

The new version 3.2.2 of the PO.DAAC Web Services have been modified to conform to an updated API in the new HiTIDE/L2SS (High-level Tool for Interactive Data Extraction / L2 Subsetting Services).  Also, there are significant changes in the Granule Subset web service.  The Granule Subset web service is now asynchronous, which prevents web timeouts and allows the subsetting of multiple granules in a single request.  A Granule Subset request is submitted, using http POST rather than GET, and a token is returned that can be used in the new Subset Status web service to determine the state of the Granule Subset request.  There is also a new Dataset Variables web service.

Visualization

SOTO 2D

State of the Ocean  (SOTO )

State of the Ocean provides near real-time data layers (vector and image) that are visualized in an HTML5 interface utilizing open-source tools such as Leaflet.js. SOTO data layers are annotated to give contextual descriptions of the ocean's features and events, and kml overlays (ice extent, hurricane tracks, clouds). Some layer implementations include Sea Surface Temperature (SST), wind vectors, and ocean current vectors.

Subsetting

PO.DAAC HITIDE Subsetter

High-level Tool for Interactive Data Extraction / L2 Subsetting Services  (HiTIDE/L2SS) Version: 4.0.1

The HiTIDE version 4.0.1 includes a redesigned user interface, improved search and granule selection workflow, instant granule variable visualization, and many more enhancements. HiTIDE allows users to subset and download popular PO.DAAC level 2 (swath) datasets. Users can search across a wide variety of parameters, such as variables, sensors and platforms, and filter the resulting data based on spatial and temporal boundaries of interest to the user. HiTIDE goes even further, offering instant previews of variable imagery, allowing users to rapidly find data of interest for download and further, rigorous scientific analysis. HiTIDE's  user interface is powered by a set of web services which facilitate machine to machine interoperability.

PO.DAAC LAS v7.3 LAS Product Server

Live Access Server (LAS) (L3 Subsetter) Version 8.4.x

LAS is a web-based L3 data visualization and subsetting tool, designed to provide flexible access to geo-referenced scientific data. It enables the web user to: visualize data with on-the-fly graphics; request custom subsets of variables in a choice of file formats; access background reference material about the data (metadata); compare (difference) variables from distributed locations.

For a guide and tutorial to using LAS see  ftp://podaac.jpl.nasa.gov/misc/web/tutorials/las/

EOSDIS Tools

REVERB-ECHO image

Reverb

Reverb is NASA's next generation metadata and service discovery tool, which provides search and access capabilities for dataset holdings at all of the Distributed Active Archive Centers (DAACs) as well as the PO.DAAC.

gcmd.jpg

Global Change Master Directory (GCMD)

GCMD holds Earth science data set and service descriptions, such as location of the data or service, associated investigators and other contacts, spatial and temporal coverage, and resolution that provide vital information to help determine whether the data or service meets the user’s needs. Use the GCMD to search for information about data and services; to order EOSDIS data, use search-and-order systems such as the EDG or DAAC-specific systems.
