The main objective of the sensorweb activity is to create an interoperable environment for a diverse set of satellite sensors via the use of software and the Internet. This capability can be used to better understand physical phenomena, such as volcanic eruptions, fires and floods. Furthermore, it facilitates science investigation since it becomes much easier to enlist existing satellite, airborne and ground sensors for required observations and then to easily create custom data products that can be delivered via Web 2.0 tools. Open tools such as Google Earth can be used to create mashups in which data sets are superimposed for purposes of visualization or calibration. The end goal is to make discovery and access to sensors as easy as finding and using websites on the Internet.
