California Young Lawyers Association (CYLA)
CYLA is the nation's largest association of young lawyers. A young lawyer has been in practice for five years or less or is 36 years old or younger.
What is CYLA?
CYLA has a history of zealously advocating issues important to its membership before the Board of Trustees. CYLA offers lawyers and new practitioners the best opportunity for involvement in our profession and for participating in public service at the state and local levels.
If you want to learn about current State Bar of California policies the CYLA Board of Directors is working on, you may contact one of the CYLA Board of Directors Representatives in your area.
The State Bar's Conference of Barristers was created in 1965 by the State Bar's Board of Trustees. The name was changed to the California Young Lawyers Association (CYLA) in 1977-78. The 2015-2016 Board is chaired by Shawtina Ferguson, Associate at The Rasmussen Law Firm, practicing in products liability defense and complex civil litigation.
We have been expanding CYLA's educational programs geared for new attorneys, creating more networking opportunities, and reaching out to the membership. For more information, contact Raven Ogden.

The California Young Lawyers Association (CYLA) offers many educational programs. We are proud to introduce the 10 Minute Mentor video series.
This series of short videos feature leading attorneys in their area of practice - providing 10 minutes of mentoring on a particular topic.
These videos are foundational in nature and designed to point you toward valuable resources within The State Bar.
These videos are completely free of charge and should you want to learn more - some of them are also available as a full length Continuing Legal Education (CLE).

Nominate a Deserving Attorney for the 2016 Jack Berman Award of Achievement
Each year, the California Young Lawyers Association ("CYLA"), a committee of The State Bar of California, confers the Jack Berman Award of Achievement to recognize a new or young attorney for distinguished service to the public, judiciary, or legal profession.
The State Bar established this prestigious award in 1992 to recognize the individual achievements of a lawyer who is either in his or her first five years of practice or age thirty-six or younger. The award is in memory of Jack Berman, a young lawyer who demonstrated outstanding service to the public and the profession, and who was tragically killed in a San Francisco shooting. This annual award honors his dedicated service to issues of concern to the profession, especially to its young lawyers.

How Do I Become a Member of CYLA?
All California attorneys who are in their first five years of practice or are 36 years of age or younger are AUTOMATICALLY members of CYLA. No separate membership fee is required. Membership in CYLA is a benefit provided as a result of your status as a newer member of the State Bar of California.
