Welcome to the MAVEN MIS

What is MAVEN?

MAVEN will determine the role that loss of volatiles from the Mars atmosphere to space has played through time, allowing us to understand the histories of Mars’ atmosphere and climate, liquid water, and planetary habitability.

MAVEN will do this by examining the current state of the upper atmosphere, ionosphere, and interactions with the solar wind; the current rates of escape of atomic and molecular species to space and the processes controlling them; and the ratios of stable isotopes that will tell us the history of loss through time.

MAVEN will deliver definitive answers to high-priority science questions about atmospheric escape that will greatly enhance our understanding of the climate history of Mars and that are directly responsive to the goals of the Mars Exploration Program.
