The Army Research Laboratory (ARL) has a deep, ingrained heritage of supporting U.S. warfighters. Our drive to creatively overcome obstacles and break new ground continues traditions started before World War II. Since 1943, the ARL (then known as the Ballistic Research Laboratory or BRL) has been at the vanguard of modern computing. Using the Bush Differential Analyzer, programmable calculators, and sheer brute force, the BRL provided ballistic calculations and firing tables that were vital to the Allied victory in World War II. In fact, the BRL at the Army's Aberdeen Proving Ground facility became the first permanent installation of what was fast becoming a strategic asset for battlefield computations and weapons development. ARL Hosts Supercomputing Summer Institute

In collaboration with the DOD High performance Computing Program, the U.S. Army Research Laboratory hosted its second annual Supercomputing Summer Institute July 18 -29, 2016. The Institute is a two-week academic program that introduces students to supercomputing architectures, applications and tools; basic principles of engineering algorithms; programming languages and techniques; and networking technologies. The objective of this program is to introduce to students how ARL solves science problems using High Performance Computing.

On July 18, twelve students ranging in ages 15-17 arrived at the ARL Supercomputing Center for the two-week academic program. In addition to honing their programming skills, students learned the importance of computational fluid dynamics, the challenges in generating computational grids, how to visualize millions of data points using Paraview, networks and distributed computing. Hand-on exercises included developing simulations and verifying their models with field test data.

The second week of the institute allowed students time to work on team projects culminating in their project presentations on the afternoon of the last day. Scientists and Engineers from CISD, VTD and WMRD, working with two certified teachers, developed learning modules and worked with the students during the two-week institute.

A Capstone Projects Presentation and Awards Ceremony was held on July 29, 2016 to recognize the student's' accomplishments.
