Remarks at The Washington Post Grand Opening Event By Secretary Kerry

  • SECRETARY KERRY: Thank you, and good morning everybody. And weeks ago – and I did receive the invitation to come here weeks before we knew whether or not Jason would be able to be released, and the others – I really looked forward to being here for this celebration, special celebration of the opening of the building and the moving of The Washington Post. But obviously, this is particularly sweet for everybody now that Jason is home.

Notice

  • Public Notice

Important Notice for Diversity Visa (DV) 2017 Entrants: Additional entrants have been added to ?selected? status on the Entrant Status Check (ESC) website www.dvlottery.state.gov. Please use your unique confirmation number to verify your status. Successful entrants are encouraged to complete the online DS-260 application immediately, so that an interview appointment at the appropriate U.S. Embassy or Consulate can be scheduled. Embassies and consulates only have a limited number of appointments each month for DV applicants, so it is vital that DV selectees start the visa process immediately.

The Department of State will not send DV selectees a notification letter or notify you of selection by email. Any email you receive from the Department of State will only direct you to the Entrant Status Check at www.dvlottery.state.gov.

DV-2017 ends on September 30, 2017. In addition, if all of the 50,000 DV visas have been issued before that date, the program will end earlier. Entrants with ?selected? status should act now since the visa process can be lengthy. DV-2017 visas cannot be issued after September 30, 2017. Participants are reminded to check the status of their DV entry through Entrant Status Check www.dvlottery.state.gov using the confirmation numbers they received when they initially submitted their applications.

  • Embassy Announces Opening of Ambassador’s Special Self-Help (SSH) Program

The United States Embassy announces the opening of the Ambassador’s Special Self-Help Program for interested community-based organizations and villages.  This is a grass-roots assistance program that allows U.S. embassies to respond to local requests for small projects that can have a relatively large impact on communities, especially in rural areas.

     Funded Activities

All SSH-funded activities must have a substantive link to the development of the local community and must encourage communities to be self-reliant and undertake similar activities on their own in the future.

     Proposals must:

     1. Be generated within a community context and be based on specific requests from local organizations.

    2. Clearly describe how the activities will be managed and implemented.

    3. Identify the anticipated results.

    4. Be completed within 12 months.

    5. Not exceed $10, 000 per project.

Proposal guidelines can be obtained on:

    Website: http://banjul.usembassy.gov/news/grants/embassy-funding-opportunities.html

Point of Contact: Programs Coordinator, Tel: 439-2856 ext 2189 or Email: PolEconBanjul@state.gov

Proposals submitted in previous years are not retained for review, but these proposals can be resubmitted for consideration.

Deadline: September 12, 2016 (Submit hard copies at the Embassy’s back/visa gate). No proposals will be accepted after September 12.

Examples of Special Self-Help projects are community-initiated, small, sustainable projects that are easily managed by community members themselves. Specific examples include construction-related projects, water-related projects, durable equipment, solar projects, environmental conservation projects, income-generating activities, and health-related projects. For more information and an application form, visit banjul.usembassy.gov. Click “Embassy Funding Opportunities” and select the link “Ambassador’s Special Self Help Program.”
