As part of the Signal Corps’ Centennial Celebration in 1960, a year-long publicity effort included articles on the latest technologies. From “Missiles and Rockets: The Missile/Space Weekly” magazine from 24 October 1960 came an article featuring the Army’s surveillance drone control system. The Surveillance Aircraft Flight Control System, AN/UPW-1, developed for the Signal Corps, used trailer-mounted radar and computing equipment to guide reconnaissance drones, carrying cameras, radar, infrared sensors, or other devices, to gather intelligence over enemy territory.

The historic Apollo 11 Mission lifted off at 9:32 EDT on 16 July 1969, to begin the first manned lunar landing mission. Fort Monmouth played a role in this mission. The Tactical Satellite Communications terminals, TACSATCOM, were developed by the Army SATCOM Agency at Fort Monmouth, and served as the first line of communication during Apollo 11 recovery operations. One of the TRC-156 terminals at Fort Monmouth coordinated satellite times during recovery. The images below were included in the 17 July 1969 edition of the “Monmouth Message,” along with an article on the role of the SATCOM Agency.
