Neutron Scattering Group

Welcome to the home page of the Neutron Scattering Group, a member of the Condensed Matter Physics and Materials Science Department at Brookhaven National Laboratory.

Activities

Crystal Growth: Choice of crystals to grow is generally motivated by our research program, but we often share samples with outside collaborators.  Facilities are illustrated here.

Neutron Scattering:  We use elastic and inelastic neutron scattering techniques to study cooperative phenomena in complex solids.  We are regular users of the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) and the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) at Oak Ridge National Lab and the NIST Center for Neutron Research (NCNR).   Our educational materials on neutron scattering are available here.  We lead the Instrument Development Team for HYSPEC at the SNS.

High-Energy X-ray Diffraction:  This technique is used to study charge order and structural phase transitions, especially as a function of pressure.  We make use of the Advanced Photon Source (APS) at Argonne National Lab and PETRA III at DESY.

Science

We are particularly interested in the role of antiferromagnetism in high-temperature superconductors.  The interaction of charge carriers with magnetic moments is of critical importance but remains a challenge to understand.  Some clues come from the study of competing and/or cooperative types of charge and/or spin order.  We continue to investigate cuprates and iron chalcogenides, as well as model systems.

There is also continuing interest in charge, lattice, and magnetic interactions in insulators.  This covers topics such as relaxor ferroelectrics and multiferroics.

Location

After roughly 50 years of occupying offices on the north side of the Physics Department (Bldg. 510), we moved in August 2013 to the Interdisciplinary Science Building (Bldg. 734).
