An area known for its virgin growth of pine trees, Odum grew with the development of the sawmill industry. Town records show that the "Haslum" post office - named for the local Haslum family - opened on July 31, 1871. On March 8, 1887, though, the office name changed to "Odum," a nod to area landowner Godfrey Odum.
