President Obama Congratulates Papua New Guinea on its 41st Anniversary
Dear Governor General:The American people join me in extending warm congratulations to Papua New Guinea as you celebrate your 41st Independence Day this September 16.
Our two countries share similar priorities on important issues ranging from maritime security to sustainable economic and environmental development. With APEC 2018 just around the corner, we highly value the many APEC working groups that Papua New Guinea has recently hosted, discussing tourism, forestry, and women in transportation. We look forward to continuing these and other such collaborations as Papua New Guinea’s first-ever APEC host year approaches.
Please accept my best wishes on this anniversary of your independence.
Sincerely,
Barack Obama

Asia Pacific Leadership Program Fellowship (APLP)
The East-West Center is pleased to invite applications for the 2017 - 2018 Asia Pacific Leadership Program Fellowship (APLP). The APLP is the center of excellence for leadership education in the Asia Pacific region and a signature program of the East West Center.
Currently celebrating its 16th anniversary, the APLP has created a network of 581 dynamic leaders in 58 countries who are helping to build a peaceful, prosperous and just Asia Pacific community.
Program Description
The APLP seeks outstanding individuals from all walks of life (government, business, NGOs, health sciences, media, monastic orders, and education) to participate in an innovative leadership development program at the East-West Center in Honolulu, Hawai’i. The average age of an APLP Fellow is 33, with an average of 5 - 8 years of professional experience prior to entering the program.
All fellows live on the East-West Center's campus in Honolulu, Hawaii from August through December 2017 for the residential portion of the program. From January – April 2018, the program is run virtually [online] and fellows have the option to return to their home countries or apply for extended fieldwork in Southeast Asia, internships, self-designed projects and employment experiences.
Application and Scholarship Instructions
Upon acceptance, all participants receive a fellowship valued at approximately $13,000 USD to cover a majority of the program costs. Substantial scholarship funding is available for the remainder of the costs of participation, though timing is critical. The earlier an application is submitted, the greater the chance that scholarship funds will be available to support participant costs beyond the fellowship provisions. Scholarship requests and early decision applications are due by December 15, 2016; all other APLP Fellowship applications are due by March 1, 2017.
Eligibility requirements and application information is available on the APLP website at: http://www.eastwestcenter.org/education/aplp
