The GBPW Board is composed of fifteen volunteer members appointed by the Governor. The Board works to identify the physician workforce needs of Georgia communities and seeks to meet those needs through the support and development of appropriate medical education and practitioner programs. The Board's responsibilities include monitoring and forecasting the supply and distribution of physicians in Georgia; assuring an adequate supply, specialty mix, and geographic distribution of physicians to meet the health care needs of Georgia; coordinating and planning physician workforce needs with state funding for medical education; and the development and support of medical education programs required to meet the physician workforce needs of our state.
To fulfill its responsibilities, the GBPW works closely with other state agencies, all medical schools within the state, residency training programs, teaching hospitals, Georgia Statewide AHEC Network, State Office of Rural Health, and University System of Georgia to ensure that the state has an adequate supply of physicians and healthcare practitioners for the citizens of Georgia.
