Like so many Georgia towns, Willacoochee grew up around the railroads. On November 12, 1889, the state legislature set the town's limits as "one-half mile each way from the Brunswick and Western Railroad depot." Although residents cannot firmly place the origin of the town's name, many believe that Willacoochee comes from a Native American Indian word that means "home of the wildcat."
