C4ISR technologies make up core enabling functions of every Army platform -- whether manned or unmanned aerial vehicles, ground combat vehicles or the Soldiers, themselves, as “platforms.” CERDEC works alongside the platform engineers from the earliest stages of development to ensure these technologies function as integrated components of a finely engineered system.
CERDEC works with Defense Department and national research organizations and labs, and international, industry and academic partners to influence research investments and to adopt, adapt and mature relevant scientific breakthroughs.
Additionally, CERDEC has a diverse network of industry and academia partners to monitor trends and to evaluate and advance new developments and candidate technologies.
CERDEC provides C4ISR technical leadership, engineering and quality assurance services that span the Army’s acquisition mission.
CERDEC is the technical authority for developing the Army’s mission command networks and systems. To ensure the continuity of those networks and systems across platforms, echelons, services and coalition partners, CERDEC has strategic partnerships with the Army's requirements bodies, other service labs, and Research, Development and Engineering Command sister centers.

These centers all develop systems, platforms and technologies in support of PEO partners that leverage or interface with Army and Defense networks. CERDEC provides the C4ISR systems and network expertise that hold Army systems together, whether mitigating risks due to size, weight, power, and cost characteristics or providing capabilities such as counter explosive hazard, offensive and defensive cyberspace operations, mission command applications, or integrated sensors for a common operating picture.
In addition to RDECOM, CERDEC has strategic partnerships with the Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) and Space and Missile Defense Command (SMDC).
CERDEC provides direct support to the Army’s Program Executive Offices for Command, Control and Communications (PEO C3T) and Intelligence and Electronic Warfare and Sensors (PEO IEW&S) as well as other Program Executive Offices.
This support involves investigating relevant, next-generation science and technology, developing and maturing new capabilities and providing engineering and technical leadership throughout program lifecycles.
CERDEC works closely with the Communications-Electronics Command (CECOM) to support the lifecycle of command, control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (C4ISR) systems and technologies. CERDEC provides the engineering expertise to see this C4ISR equipment through from "cradle to grave."
CERDEC partners closely with DOD laboratories to help focus basic science efforts and to mature and develop scientific breakthroughs.
Working with partners outside of the DOD allows CERDEC to leverage outside resources to come up with the best and most practical technology for Soldiers.
