Federal law requires every CDL or CLP holder to “self-certify” as to driving type.

To satisfy the requirements of 49 CFR 383.71, you must check the self-certification category that applies to you. Please check only one category. You must also provide a medical certificate. Please fax a copy of your current medical certificate card to 860-263-5568. I certify that I drive or expect to drive a commercial vehicle in:
Category 1 – (NI) – Non-excepted Interstate I will operate a commercial motor vehicle both in and outside the boundaries of Connecticut.
Category 2 – (NA) – Non-excepted Intrastate I will operate a commercial motor vehicle only within the boundaries of Connecticut.
Category 3 – (EI) – Excepted Interstate Transportation I will operate a commercial motor vehicle both in and outside the boundaries of Connecticut.
Category 4 – (EA) – Excepted Intrastate Transportation I will operate a commercial motor vehicle within the boundaries of Connecticut. You must obtain a duplicate of your current CLP or CDL reflecting any changes based on your self-certification category selection.
