Addition information and resources regarding fire safety issues in Rhode Island can be found on the RI Division of the State Fire Marshal web site or by telephone at 401-383-7717. Information regarding the inspection process for various occupancy types can be viewed here.

All National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) codes, including NFPA 1, NFPA 72 and NFPA 101 can be viewed at no cost on the NFPA web site. Additionally, all codes can be purchased online from the NFPA Online Catalog or by telephone at 800-344-3555.

A printed and electronic (CD) version of the 2015 - 2016 Rhode Island Fire Laws and Rules Annotated can be purchased from LexisNexis online or by telephone at 877-461-8801. This publication contains all fire-related Rhode Island statutes, a complete copy of all rules & regulations, a complete copy of the Rehabilitation Building and Fire Code for Existing Buildings and Structures and all current Blanket Variances & Formal Interpretations.

APPEALS / VARIANCES

Application forms for appeals/variances are available from the Fire Safety Code Board**, the State Fire Marshal's Office or your local city or town fire authority. All applications must be completely filled out, signed by the Applicant (property owner or authorized representative) and the state or local fire authority and accompanied by the appropriate filing fee. ^^^ The Board is now accepting Variance Application forms that can be downloaded here, however the completed form still must be submitted to the Board with the appropriate filing fee, any supporting documents and original signatures* - copies of signatures will not be accepted.

*N O T I C E: In accordance with Fire Safety Code Section 6-1-11, any person, other than an attorney at law, who signs an application form as an authorized representative, shall provide the Board of Appeal & Review with a letter of authorization signed by the owner of the subject property.
