Adult Correctional Facilities

The Idaho Department of Correction (IDOC) has approximately 8,000 adult inmates incarcerated in ten prisons and four community reentry centers. Inmates are also held in county jails and when necessary, out-of-state contract facilities. The Contract Facility Monitoring Division monitors contract facilities and county jails.

Inmate status types include termers, retained jurisdiction, and parole violators.

• Termers are individuals a court has sentenced to a term of incarceration over one year in an IDOC facility.

• Retained jurisdiction or "riders" are individuals on which the court has retained jurisdiction and sentenced to a period of incarceration in an IDOC facility. The IDOC assesses riders to determine their needs and places them in the appropriate facilities to receive intensive programming and education. Upon completion of a rider, the court determines whether to place an individual on probation or sentence the individual to term.
   
• Parole violators are parolees who violated the terms of parole or committed new crimes and are awaiting a revocation hearing from the Commission of Pardons and Parole. The Commission of Pardons and Parole can revoke parole and return the individual to finish his/her sentence or reinstate the individual on parole.
