COMMISSION TO WELCOME LEADING NATIONAL
EXPERT ON LIMITING GOVERNMENT WASTE
Columbia,
S.C. - Friday, June 13, 2003 - Governor Mark Sanford today announced
that the recently formed Governor's Commission on Management,
Accountability and Performance (MAP) will hold its second meeting
this coming Tuesday, June 17, 2003. Created by executive order
and announced last Tuesday, June 10, 2003, the commission is charged
with studying the way government does business in an effort to
save taxpayer money, increase accountability, improve service,
consolidate functions, return jobs to the private sector and help
make South Carolina more competitive in a global economy. Tuesday's
meeting will feature remarks from Thomas Schatz, President of
Citizens Against Government Waste (CAGW), one of the nation's
leading taxpayer advocacy and government watchdog groups. Founded
in 1984 by industrialist Peter Grace (who led former President
Ronald Reagan's "Grace" Commission), CAGW boast a national
membership of over 1 million people.
"Thomas
Schatz will be an invaluable resource in this commission's work
to save South Carolina taxpayers money," said Ken Wingate,
Commission Chairman. "His experience in fighting this battle
at the federal level will give us the perspective and insight
we need to tackle the task we've been charged with in our state."
"Governor
Sanford is a leader in trying to solve the state budget crises
that are gripping the nation," Schatz said. "In creating
MAP, he has an effective solution to budget problems the result
of which will be a more effective and accountable government,
improved delivery of services, and savings for the taxpayers of
South Carolina. I'm honored to have the opportunity to address
this commission and contribute to its efforts."
Tuesday's
meeting of the MAP Commission will be held at 1:00 p.m. in the
