The mission of the Mississippi State Board of Cosmetology is to regulate the instruction and practice of cosmetology and related professions by establishing rules and regulations relating to qualifications for licensure and procedures for the administration of examination prior to licensure, and by establishment of rules and regulations setting forth sanitation requirements for the operation of cosmetological establishments, for the benefit of the consumer and for the public health.

NOTICE

NOTICE - The Mississippi Board of Cosmetology (the "Board") has implemented new procedures for any individual who has been approved for an initial operator license.  A temporary letter of authorization to work will be sent to expedite a notice of eligibility to work.  The orginal letter must be posted in the operator's work area at all times.  A license will be mailed once processed.  

NOTICE - The Mississippi Board of Cosmetology (the “Board”) has implemented new procedures in hopes of expediting violations that are pending before the Board. Those that were found to have committed a violation will be mailed a letter, Consent Agreement, and a copy of the Violation Form. Refer to the frequently asked questions (FAQ) quick link regarding the new procedures.

Please note: The last day Pearson VUE will be testing the Mississippi Cosmetology exams will be Wednesday, December 31, 2014. We encourage candidates to schedule as early as possible to test prior to this date. As a reminder, all candidates must present their Board-issued approval letter to sit for an exam.

USE OF LASER DEVICES IN COSMETIC PRACTICE

The Board of Cosmetology, in keeping with an opinion of the MS. State Board of Medical Licensure has issued a position statement that prohibits the use of laser unless the individual is under the supervision of a physician. ​

REQUIREMENTS FOR PRESENTATION OF I.D. AND USE OF DUPLICATE LICENSE

Any individual who fails to provide I.D. to an agent of the board, during an inspection, when requested, will result in a citation being issued to the owner/manager of a salon (Refer to Rule 111.)​​

FAQs

What is the processing time for a new or renewed license?
Licenses are mailed 6-8 weeks from the date of qualification. The qualification date for renewals is the date the correct fee, renewal form and passport photo is received in the Board office; for new practitioners it is the date the correct fee, examination results and passport photo are received; for new salons, it is the date the approval was received from the inspector.​
