VG 17 in Las Vegas was the first of four joint operational disaster readiness exercises this year hosted by United States Northern Command. This week’s exercise involved multiple local, federal and state agencies including the city of North Las Vegas, the Nevada and California national guards and the Nevada Division of Emergency Management.

The American Red Cross of Northern Nevada honored retired Nevada Guard Lt. Col. John Strahan, along with seven others as Everyday Heroes, for courageous acts and work during a ceremony at the Atlantis Casino Resort in Reno. 

STEAD – With her slight build and soft-spoken mannerisms, former high school cheerleader Pvt. Brittany Sears seems an unlikely candidate to become the Nevada Army Guard’s first woman to hold a combat-occupation role in a front-line unit. But Sears has began her quest last week to become a combat engineer (12B military occupation specialty) for the 609th Engineer Company in Fallon. She left for basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., determined to hold a combat job in the Army.
