The Eligibility and Enrollment Office can help veterans apply for health care benefits. Once enrolled, a veteran will be assigned a primary care physician and a primary care social worker.

Eligibility
- Discharge under other than dishonorable conditions.
- 24 continuous months of service for active duty members serving after 1981 -OR-
- Full period ordered to federal active duty for Reserves and National Guard.
- Not all veterans who fulfill the above basic eligibility requirements are eligible for VA healthcare enrollment. Veterans are enrolled in VA health care according to priority groups, based on disability, service and income.
- Because the eligibility and enrollment requirements are complex, the VA encourages all Veterans to apply so that the VA may determine their enrollment eligibility.

Program Description
Former POWs are eligible for VA compensation for disabilities related to their military service and captivity. Certain conditions are presumed to be related to time in captivity. These presumptive disabilities are based on studies of the long-term effects of captivity, deprivation, trauma, and cold injury on former POWs. If a former POW is diagnosed as having one or more of these conditions to a degree that is at least 10 percent disabling, VA presumes that it is associated with the POW experience. Over 16,000 POWs are receiving disability compensation for service-connected injuries, diseases, or illnesses.
Eligibility
- Former POWs who are diagnosed with any of the conditions in the categories below are presumed to be service-connected for those conditions, regardless of their length of time in captivity:
Osteoporosis (on or after October 10, 2008, if the POW has PTSD);
Neuro-Psychiatric, including psychosis, dysthymic disorder (Depressive Neurosis), any of the Anxiety States (e.g., PTSD);
Cold Injury;
Traumatic Arthritis;
Stroke;
Heart Disease - The following additional conditions are presumed to be service-connected for former POWs who were captive for 30 days or more:
Osteoporosis (on or after September 28, 2009);
Nutritional deficiencies, including avitaminosis, beriberi, malnutrition, and pellagra Helminthiasis;

Program Description
Dependents and survivors may be eligible for compensation, pension, health care, education, and home loan benefits. Typically, these benefits are available to a surviving spouse, dependent child(ren), and/or parent(s) of a deceased former POW or a former POW with a service-connected disability.

Each VA Regional Office has a POW Veterans Outreach Coordinator who is a direct point of contact for you to learn more about what benefits you qualify for, assist you with applying for those benefits, and refer you to other organizations and resources that will help you meet your needs. Program Description
The Eligibility and Enrollment Office can help veterans apply for health care benefits. Once enrolled, a veteran will be assigned a primary care physician and a primary care social worker.
Representatives can be reached after hours and on weekends at: 401-273-7100 Ext. 3250.
Eligibility
- Discharge under other than dishonorable conditions.
- 24 continuous months of service for active duty members serving after 1981 -OR-
- Full period ordered to federal active duty for Reserves and National Guard.
- Not all veterans who fulfill the above basic eligibility requirements are eligible for VA healthcare enrollment. Veterans are enrolled in VA health care according to priority groups, based on disability, service and income.
- Because the eligibility and enrollment requirements are complex, the VA encourages all Veterans to apply so that the VA may determine their enrollment eligibility.
How To Apply
- Veterans can apply for health benefits through form 1010-EZ. The form can be submitted online, by phone, by mail, or in person at the Providence VA Medical Center Eligibility Office. Individual programs or clinics may also assist in the enrollment process.

VA Disability Compensation for Former Prisoners of War (POWs)
Program Description
Former POWs are eligible for VA compensation for disabilities related to their military service and captivity. Certain conditions are presumed to be related to time in captivity. These presumptive disabilities are based on studies of the long-term effects of captivity, deprivation, trauma, and cold injury on former POWs. If a former POW is diagnosed as having one or more of these conditions to a degree that is at least 10 percent disabling, VA presumes that it is associated with the POW experience. Over 16,000 POWs are receiving disability compensation for service-connected injuries, diseases, or illnesses.
Eligibility
- Former POWs who are diagnosed with any of the conditions in the categories below are presumed to be service-connected for those conditions, regardless of their length of time in captivity:
Osteoporosis (on or after October 10, 2008, if the POW has PTSD);
Neuro-Psychiatric, including psychosis, dysthymic disorder (Depressive Neurosis), any of the Anxiety States (e.g., PTSD);
Cold Injury;
Traumatic Arthritis;
Stroke;
Heart Disease - The following additional conditions are presumed to be service-connected for former POWs who were captive for 30 days or more:
Osteoporosis (on or after September 28, 2009);
Nutritional deficiencies, including avitaminosis, beriberi, malnutrition, and pellagra Helminthiasis;
Peripheral Neuropathy;
Digestive disorders, including peptic ulcer disease, chronic dysentery, irritable bowel syndrome, and cirrhosis of the liver

Program Description
Former POWs are eligible for VA compensation for disabilities related to their military service and captivity. Certain conditions are presumed to be related to time in captivity. These presumptive disabilities are based on studies of the long-term effects of captivity, deprivation, trauma, and cold injury on former POWs. If a former POW is diagnosed as having one or more of these conditions to a degree that is at least 10 percent disabling, VA presumes that it is associated with the POW experience. Over 16,000 POWs are receiving disability compensation for service-connected injuries, diseases, or illnesses.
Eligibility
- Former POWs who are diagnosed with any of the conditions in the categories below are presumed to be service-connected for those conditions, regardless of their length of time in captivity:
Osteoporosis (on or after October 10, 2008, if the POW has PTSD);
Neuro-Psychiatric, including psychosis, dysthymic disorder (Depressive Neurosis), any of the Anxiety States (e.g., PTSD);
Cold Injury;
Traumatic Arthritis;
Stroke;
Heart Disease - The following additional conditions are presumed to be service-connected for former POWs who were captive for 30 days or more:
Osteoporosis (on or after September 28, 2009);

Each VA Regional Office has a POW Veterans Outreach Coordinator who is a direct point of contact for you to learn more about what benefits you qualify for, assist you with applying for those benefits, and refer you to other organizations and resources that will help you meet your needs. Program Description
The Eligibility and Enrollment Office can help veterans apply for health care benefits. Once enrolled, a veteran will be assigned a primary care physician and a primary care social worker.
Representatives can be reached after hours and on weekends at: 401-273-7100 Ext. 3250.
Eligibility
- Discharge under other than dishonorable conditions.
- 24 continuous months of service for active duty members serving after 1981 -OR-
- Full period ordered to federal active duty for Reserves and National Guard.
- Not all veterans who fulfill the above basic eligibility requirements are eligible for VA healthcare enrollment. Veterans are enrolled in VA health care according to priority groups, based on disability, service and income.
- Because the eligibility and enrollment requirements are complex, the VA encourages all Veterans to apply so that the VA may determine their enrollment eligibility.
How To Apply
- Veterans can apply for health benefits through form 1010-EZ. The form can be submitted online, by phone, by mail, or in person at the Providence VA Medical Center Eligibility Office. Individual programs or clinics may also assist in the enrollment process.

VA Disability Compensation for Former Prisoners of War (POWs)
Program Description
Former POWs are eligible for VA compensation for disabilities related to their military service and captivity. Certain conditions are presumed to be related to time in captivity. These presumptive disabilities are based on studies of the long-term effects of captivity, deprivation, trauma, and cold injury on former POWs. If a former POW is diagnosed as having one or more of these conditions to a degree that is at least 10 percent disabling, VA presumes that it is associated with the POW experience. Over 16,000 POWs are receiving disability compensation for service-connected injuries, diseases, or illnesses.
Eligibility
- Former POWs who are diagnosed with any of the conditions in the categories below are presumed to be service-connected for those conditions, regardless of their length of time in captivity:
Osteoporosis (on or after October 10, 2008, if the POW has PTSD);
Neuro-Psychiatric, including psychosis, dysthymic disorder (Depressive Neurosis), any of the Anxiety States (e.g., PTSD);
Cold Injury;
Traumatic Arthritis;
Stroke;
Heart Disease - The following additional conditions are presumed to be service-connected for former POWs who were captive for 30 days or more:
Osteoporosis (on or after September 28, 2009);
Nutritional deficiencies, including avitaminosis, beriberi, malnutrition, and pellagra Helminthiasis;
Peripheral Neuropathy;
Digestive disorders, including peptic ulcer disease, chronic dysentery, irritable bowel syndrome, and cirrhosis of the liver
