Community & Economic Development

The Department of Community and Economic Development’s primary purpose is to retain and grow existing businesses, recruit new business, expand employment opportunities, and encourage the establishment and growth of commerce and industry in the City of West Des Moines.

As part of the City's economic development efforts, department staff continues to be instrumental in attracting new businesses and housing into the City by working closely with the development community to find suitable sites compatible with zoning requirements and the City's Comprehensive Plan. Even though there is plenty of new construction occurring, the City also continues to invest in existing and infill housing through housing rehabilitation and economic development grants, which are administered by Community and Economic Development staff. Retention and growth of business and industry within West Des Moines is a high priority for the City.

Mission Statement: The Community and Economic Development department will plan and promote an economically strong and vibrant community through business retention and development, housing initiatives, redevelopment, and community promotion.
