Situational Awareness Geospatial Enterprise
SAGE is a robust GIS architecture designed to distribute and empower all USNORTHCOM Mission Partners with actionable geospatial data anywhere in the world.
SAGE is run by the Command and Control directorate at NORAD-NORTHCOM, Peterson AFB.
There are 4 major components to SAGE:
- The GCCS/GIS architecture where geospatial analysis and data collection occurs.
- GoogleEarth KML publishing which enables GCCS tracks directly to SAGE users.
- ArcGIS Server web services that provide industrial GIS use for Federal & State partners and provides a SAGE web map.
- SAGE Cloud, a web front end that allows users to upload and integrate their data within SAGE.
Most users only see the Google Earth and web services portion but the power lies in SAGE’s ability to distribute data securely over the World Wide Web and NIPRnet. While SAGE is recognized as the de-facto unclassified COP within DoD, its use is not strictly relegated to Federal DoD users.
USNORTHCOM is intimately involved in Humanitarian Assistance/Disaster Relief as well as Homeland Defense and Homeland Security missions. This sometimes requires high speed data sharing to State EOCs and local emergency management personnel whom USNORTHCOM is supporting. With assistance by NGA, USGS and other federal partners, the general rule of thumb in using SAGE data is: If you are working with USNORTHCOM, you can "see" the data, but we are unable to directly "give" you the data.
