About Armenia
Since 1992, USAID has provided a broad range of development programs in Armenia, shifting from an initial humanitarian emphasis to assistance for economic, political and social transition. Armenia’s location on the strategic seam between Europe and Asia, as well as strong ties between the American and Armenian people, make the country’s stability and prosperity an important U.S. interest.
Moving toward sustainability, USAID has gradually increased direct engagement and partnerships with the Government of Armenia, the local private sector, civil society, local institutions, and other donors to achieve lasting results and leave legacies.
USAID's over 30 projects in the capital Yerevan and all the provinces of Armenia work in five principal areas: democratic governance, economic growth, water and energy management, social protection and health care. USAID pays special attention to youth as drivers of change, and cultivates innovation and technology across its programs to expand economic opportunities and reduce Armenia’s isolation and border constraints. USAID activities in Armenia also seek to ensure that the benefits of growth and good governance, including service delivery and employment opportunities, are also felt outside of the capital Yerevan.
