Welcome to FIDO!
FIDO gives you access to the National FIA (Forest Inventory and Analysis) databases. You now have the ability to generate tables and maps of forest statistics through a web browser without having to understand the underlying data structures.
With FIDO, you will be able to run any of the standard reports for a specific area of interest and survey year or, if you are an advanced user, create completely customized reports based on whatever criteria you choose. As an advanced user, you can also save your work to your hard drive to load/rerun your custom FIDO retrievals at a later time.
October 20, 2016:
New Tool Available! The Design and Analysis Toolkit for Inventory and Monitoring, DATIM, is available.
January 8, 2016: FIDO's Standard Reports is no longer being maintained. If you are experiencing issues, please use the custom reporting tool instead. FIDO's Standard Report option will be discontinued upon future release.
For FIDO, EVALIDator and the DataMart users wishing to know what has recently become available see this page:
http://apps.fs.fed.us/fiadb-downloads/images/recent_load_history.html
September 22, 2015: The EVALIDator is unable to produce estimates of growth, removals and mortality for multiple inventories when "Trend analysis" is chosen as the row classification variable and the inventories chosen have different sampling designs (i.e., a mix of periodic and annual inventories). In the event that a user inadvertently runs such a retrieval the EVALIDator will return zeroes for the periodic inventories and the correct numbers for the annual inventories. We are sorry for any inconvenience.

All 10 carbon templates added to "Tree carbon reports".

Various layout changes made to "Tree volume reports".

The major difference in this release is that we have dropped SVG and replaced it with Google Maps. We have also fixed and added a filter. Once more, the service has been improved to prevent memory loss. Following is a short list of the bugs that have been fixed:
- Google Maps have replaced SVG.
- The Stand Age filter has been fixed;
- The Standing Dead filter has been added;
- The reporting service has been fine-tuned to correct any memory losses;
- Fixes a few minor bugs.
Release: Jan 27, 2009 (ver. 1.2.0r2)
Once again we've been hard at work trying to make FIDO better and better. This time around the focus was on making FIDO more reliable and fixing all the major, known bugs. A short list of the bugs that were fixed are:
- Stablized the reporting service to be more reliable;
- Added the ability to select a region by unit code
-
Made FIDO "smarter" so when you ask for Forestland or Timberland queries, you can now be assured you're getting the proper values, whether for Area, Volume, or GRM;
- Cleaned up most of the known bugs in the SVG output;
- Updated several lists, including: tree species, species groups, and forest types;
- Firefox will now display CVS output;
- Increased performance by 20-30%
- Restricted the "All land" attribute to "Table 1: Area of all land", and
- Made many textual and other, smaller changes.

- Stand age classifications;
- PDF output (beta), and
- New round of bug fixes.
Release: Jan 15, 2008 (ver. 0.3.0r1)
Important note: we had to change the structure of configuration files from the previous release. Unfortunately this means that
if you've saved your report templates from the prior version (before 12/12/2007), you will not be able upload them to this new version. If there is enough demand, we will write an updater that will take old configurations and automatically update them. Please send an e-mail to:
wimibes@fs.fed.us if you have an existing config that you'd really like to keep using.
If we only receive a few requests, we'll have you send us your configuration and we'll update it manually.
Ok, that's the bad news...now for the good news. This version has a host of new features, changes, and fixes that will (hopefully) help meet more of your reporting needs:
- Speed improvements should mean that your pages load between 50 and 200% faster, depending on the browser;
- You can now set tree height and tree diameter filters;
- Added help files for configuring your browser and using the SVG viewer;
- Map your county-level reports using the SVG viewer (custom reports only);
- Export and save reports in CSV and XML format (custom reports only);
- Fixed reporting bugs in "Standard Reports";
- Added templates for biomass reports, and
- Circle can be displayed on map for circular retrievals.

Help on Usage
Every page consists of 3 sections:
1. The left section is dependent on which button in the right column is chosen and/or highlighted. For example, if the
Produce Report button is highlighted, the left section will display output type options (HTML, SVG, CSV, and XML), Advanced Options (General options, Mapping configuration, and Export options), the option to refresh your report, and a restore previous configuration option.
2. The center section is dependent on which item in the left column is selected.
The center section in any stage of the report can be maximized by clicking on the maximize button
. Click the restore button
to set the window back to its normal state.
The bottom half of the center section will display a summary of the selections the user has made. On all screens, this part also functions as a wizard, leading the user from one option to the next whenever he/she clicks on the
Continue button. The wizard can be turned off by clicking on the "Hide Wizard" checkbox.
3. The right section will display a number of buttons, depending on whether the
FIA Standard Reports or
Custom Retrievals button was selected on the home page. Click the "Home" text to return to the home page from anywhere within the application.
Note that when starting a new custom retrieval, all the buttons (with the exception of the
Start New Retrieval button) will be greyed out and inaccessible until a template is selected.
