PARTNERS FOR A BETTER WORLD
Success Story:
PARTNERS FOR A BETTER WORLD represents many charitable organizations offering
opportunities to CT State Employees through the annual charitable giving campaign. Its mission is to help
these charitable organizations connect to donors. The charities provide a broad spectrum of answers to basic human needs and development. Please take a moment to see the organizations whose work in CT has made a significant impact in your own communities and abroad. Partners for a Better World thanks donors who, by generous donations, help charities reach their missions and goals. This federation reaches out to you who may not be familiar with this work.
Below are two brief but powerful examples:
Asian Americans Advancing Justice | AAJC is a national nonprofit founded to advance civil and human rights for Asian
Americans and to build and promote a fair and equitable society for all. Advocacy programs include immigration and
immigrant rights, voting rights, census and data collection, litigation and the Community Partners Network.
Among its many programs, AAJC holds a Youth Leadership Summit to bring diverse college students from across the
country to Washington, D.C., to learn how to advocate for racial justice and civil rights.
STUDENT JES PHILLIP shared her experience of being the "unknown Micronesian student" and being forced to show her
green card [at college campuses], in order to be granted admission, regardless of her grades. After the summit, Jes
took these lessons back home where she organized a meeting for Micronesian students, encouraging them to pursue
higher education and showing them how to apply for scholarships. She says, "It was a wonderful experience stemming
from my time in Washington."
The Center for Victims of Torture (CVT) has helped more than 30,000 survivors find the courage and hope to rebuild
their
lives. Once such survivor is a 10-year old Syrian girl named Jana, who was kidnapped to force her father to turn himself in. Jana was grabbed by a man, thrown into a pickup with other screaming children and all were put in a dark underground dungeon for 22 days. The children were beaten. They were given dirty water and only one boiled egg to eat per day.
When Jana was released, she developed severe PTSD symptoms, depression and anxiety. She couldn't forget the soldier's
face, his big moustache, shaved head, his harsh voice. Through individual psychotherapy sessions at CVT Jordan,
Jana was helped to process her trauma. She learned how to cope with her fears, isolation and sadness. Jana also
received individual physiotherapy sessions and was referred to a social worker for medical and social needs.
With CVT's help Jana has made continuous progress, and now Jana is back to being a child again.
