Welcome to the Oceanography Division of the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory.

Please read our Privacy Policy.

The Oceanography Division of the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), the major center for in-house Navy research and development in oceanography, is located at NRL-SSC, a tenant of NASA's Stennis Space Center. NRL-SSC is co-located with the other Navy tenants, the Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Command and the Naval Oceanographic Office. The Oceanography Division is known nationally and internationally for its combination of theoretical, numerical, and experimental approaches to oceanographic problems. The Oceanography Division's theoretical research makes extensive use of the Maury Oceanographic Library, which is recognized as one of the best and most comprehensive oceanographic libraries in the world.

The division numerically models the ocean on the world's most powerful supercomputers and operates a number of highly sophisticated graphics systems to visualize ocean model results. The seagoing experimental programs of the division are well supported and range worldwide. The division maintains two satellite receiving systems, a computer network with automated processing capabilities for ocean color and advanced optical instrumentation and calibration facilities. In the laboratory, the division operates an environmental scanning electron microscope for detailed studies of microbiologically influenced corrosion in naval materials.
