While visiting the USS MAKIN ISLAND (LHD 8) in Singapore last week, Secretary of the Navy remarked on the progress of U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps #energy consumption.

“If we didn’t do something, energy could be used as a weapon against us,” Mabus said. “Last year Navy and Marine Corps bases met the 50 percent goal for #alternative energy, and at sea, we’re at about 30 percent. Half of that is nuclear, the rest is #biofuels.”

Congratulations to Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany, featured in Biomass Magazine as the #USNavy's first "net-zero" #energy installation! The 8.5 megawatt biomass-fueled, steam-to-electricity generator being installed -- in conjunction with equipment upgrades, a landfill gas electricity generator, and other measures -- is expected to reduce the base's total annual electrical consumption by 15%, reaching "net-zero" status with that #renewable energy produced on-site.
