Center for Arts in Medicine at the University of Florida VA & Military Programs
The University of Florida is home to a unique Arts in Medicine VA & Military Program, which includes a Rural Veterans Tele-rehabilitation Initiative (PI: Charles Levy, MD), the nation's first telehealth-based creative arts therapy program at a VA Medical Center. The Rural Veterans program is also developing a program model that focuses on empowering recreational therapists to use the arts as a primary tool in patient care. Next month, the group will be hosting Telling Gainesville: A Soldier's Narrative of War, from November 10-19. Haley Veterans’ Hospital, Tampa, FL
For decades, USF Nursing has partnered with James A. Haley Veterans’ Hospital in the areas of education and clinical practice. The two partners recently extended that relationship – adding research to their longtime partnership. Part of that extension includes the collaboration between Susan McMillan, PhD, distinguished professor at USF Nursing, and the hospital’s center of innovation on disability and rehabilitation research. Dr. McMillan has been working with respective research partners at the VA hospital to mentor pre-doctoral and post-doctoral fellows about how to conduct research.View video »
The Center of Innovation on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (CINDRR) is a multi-site COIN research center located in Gainesville, FL and Tampa, FL. It is affiliated with the North Florida/South Georgia Veterans Health System Malcolm Randall VA Medical Center and the James A. Haley Veterans' Hospital. Both sites are part of the Veterans Integrated Service Network (VISN) 8 which extends from South Georgia to Miami, Florida, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
CINDRR is dedicated to conducting research that identifies, develops, and tests strategies for improving Veteran rehabilitation services across the continuum of care and providing long term support for Veterans with disabilities and their families, including issues related to access, utilization, cost, quality, and health outcomes.
Our research focuses on maximizing Innovative Rehabilitation outcomes, seamlessly integrating Rehabilitation Analytics Research research, and advocating the use of Implementation to provide outstanding outcomes for Veterans and their families. Our center goals include providing excellent Mentorship opportunities for the next generation of VA researchers and fostering Cross-Center Collaborations and VA Operational Partnerships to benefit VHA research.
Examples of continuing collaboration between the two CINDRR sites, our national program, COIN, and affiliate partners are found in the stories above and throughout our site.
