Monitoring Trends in Burn Severity project (MTBS)

Procedures used to generate burn severity assessments for the MTBS project are essentially the same as those described elsewhere on this website: Pre and Post fire Landsat images are converted to the normalized burn ratio (NBR) and the difference is computed (dNBR). The dNBR is then interpreted into High, Medium and Low burn severity. The essential differences lie in the products.

  1. The MTBS products are in the national Albers Conical Equal Area projection rather than a user-requested projection (see below). All NPS assessments generated after September 2007 will use the Albers projection.
  2. Burn Severity products are available via the MTBS distribution system and this site.
  3. Original Landsat data are available via GLOVIS (set collection to: 'Landsat MRLC/MTBS Reflectance').

The following products will be delivered via a single .zip file:

  • Pre-Fire Landsat scene subset (Geo-TIFF)
  • Post-Fire Landsat scene subset (Geo-TIFF)
  • Perimeter Landsat scene subset (if used, Geo-TIFF)
  • dNBR subset (Signed 16 bit Geo-TIFF)
  • RdNBR subset (Signed 16 bit Geo-TIFF)
  • Thematic Burn Severity (Geo-TIFF)
  • Fire Perimeter (shape file)
  • Cloud and shadow mask (if used, shape file)
  • Burn Severity statistics (Two .dbf files)
  • FGDC metadata file (.xml file)
