The Adjutant General Tennessee National Guard

Major General Terry M. "Max" Haston was appointed Tennessee's 75th Adjutant General on 1 January 2010.  He is responsible for the supervision of the Military Department of Tennessee that includes the Army National Guard, the Air National Guard, the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency, and the Tennessee State Guard.

 

Before his appointment, Maj. Gen. Haston served as the Assistant Adjutant General, Army and the Deputy Chief of Staff for Training and Operations / J-3 for Joint Force Headquarters, Tennessee.

 

Maj. Gen. Haston was then assigned to 3-67 Armor, 2nd Armored Division where he served as a Tank Platoon Leader, Company Executive Officer, Support Platoon Leader and Battalion S-4.

 

Upon leaving active duty in 1983, Maj. Gen. Haston joined the Tennessee Army National Guard where he commanded Company M, 3/278th Armored Cavalry Regiment in Rockwood, Tennessee.  In 1987, Maj. Gen. Haston joined the Active Guard/Reserve (AGR) program and served as the 3/278th ACR Training Officer and S-3 until joining the 278th Regimental staff in 1989.

 In 1992, he assumed the duties as the Regimental S-3 until 1997 when he became the Commander of Third Squadron, 278th ACR (Phantom Raider Squadron).  Simultaneously, Maj. Gen. Haston served as the Training Officer for the Tennessee Army National Guard.

 

Following the completion of the resident course, U.S. Army War College in Carlisle Barracks, PA, Maj. Gen. Haston became the 7th Commander of Tennessee's largest unit, the 278th Armored Cavalry Regiment, headquartered in Knoxville, TN.

 

After leaving command, Maj. Gen. Haston was assigned as the Deputy Chief of Staff, for Operations and J-3, Joint Force Headquarters, Tennessee.  In May 2005, Maj. Gen. Haston mobilized and deployed as the Chief of Reserve Components, Multi-National Corps Iraq (XVIII Airborne Corps).  Upon completion of his tour in the Middle East, he returned as the J-3, JFHQ TN.

EDUCATION:

Maj. Gen. Haston is a graduate of the Armor Officer Basic and Advance Courses at Fort Knox, Kentucky, Tactical Commander's Development Course and Command and General Staff Course at FT Leavenworth, KS.  He is also a resident graduate of the United States War College at Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania where he received his Masters Degree in Strategic Studies.

Deputy Adjutant General

Major General Jeffrey H. Holmes is the Deputy Adjutant General, Tennessee National Guard. He is  responsible to the Adjutant General for the supervision of training and readiness for the more than 14,000 Soldiers and Airmen within the Tennessee National Guard.

 

In addition to his duties as the Deputy Adjutant General, Maj. Gen. Holmes serves as the Assistant for Reserve Affairs, US Army Chief of Engineers in Washington, DC.  Holmes duties include assisting the Chief of Engineers in carrying out his responsibilities to the Army Chief of Staff and serve as the senior Army National Guard Engineer representative to the Chief of Engineers. He will provide recommendations regarding mobilization in support of national emergencies, homeland security, contingency operations and the rapid activation of engineer units in support of wartime mobilization missions.

Before his assignment as the Deputy Adjutant General, he served as the Assistant Adjutant General-Army (Traditional) and as the Commander of the 194th Engineer Brigade, Tennessee Army National Guard. The 194th Engineer Brigade is one of the Army’s most diverse multi-functional engineer brigades consisting of an engineer battalion, an engineer detachment, and two Military Police Battalions.

 

Major General Holmes enlisted as an Armor Crewman in 1979 and was commissioned Field Artillery from Tennessee Military Academy Officer Candidate School in 1984. Holmes commanded the 278th Armored Cavalry Regiment during its deployment to Iraq in 2010, and as the Commander of 3rd Squadron, 278th ACR in Operation Iraqi Freedom III in 2004-2005. He graduated in 1985 from the University of Tennessee with a Bachelor of Architecture, and is a 2008 graduate of the United States Army War College with a Master of Strategic Studies.

Assistant Adjutant General, Air

Brig. Gen. Donald L. Johnson is the Assistant Adjutant General, Air for the Tennessee National Guard. In this capacity, Brig. Gen. Johnson commands and insures the readiness of Tennessee's three flying and three mission support units. The flying units consist of the 118th Wing in Nashville, the 164th Airlift Wing in Memphis and the 134th Air Refueling Wing in Knoxville. The support units are the 119th Command and Control Group in Knoxville, the 241st Engineering and Installation Squadron in Chattanooga and the 236th Intelligence Squadron in Nashville.

 

Before his appointment as the ATAG, Air, Brig. Gen. Johnson served as the Deputy Director of Manpower, Personnel and Services for the Air National Guard in Washington, DC. As the Deputy Director, he was responsible for the oversight and direction of all day to day activities with the A1 Directorate supporting 107,600 Air National Guard members worldwide.

 

Brig. Gen. Johnson entered service with the active duty Air Force in October of 1976. Upon completion of basic training and tech school he was assigned to the 363rd Tactical Fighter Wing, Shaw AFB, SC. He enlisted in the Air National Guard with the 134th Air Refueling Wing in 1978 serving as a Crew Chief on KC-135 aircraft. Brig. Gen. Johnson was commissioned in 1986 through the Academy of Military Science, McGhee Tyson ANG Base, Knoxville, TN. He completed Logistics Plans training and was assigned to the 134th Air refueling Wing in Knoxville as the Installation Mobility Officer.

Brig. Gen. Johnson served the wing in various capacities in his ANG career, including Logistics Plans Officer, Supply Officer, Maintenance Operations Flight Commander, Aircraft Generation Squadron Commander, Mission Support Flight Commander, and the Advisor to the Commander, Air Reserve Personnel Center in Denver, Colorado before his assignment as the Deputy Director of Manpower, Personnel and Services for the Air National Guard.

Assistant Adjutant General, Army

Brigadier General Tommy H. Baker is the Assistant Adjutant General-Army, Tennessee National Guard. He assists the Adjutant General with the responsibility for the training and supervision of 13,000 Soldiers and Airmen in the Tennessee National Guard.

 

Brig. Gen. Baker has served as a Cavalry and Armor Officer, Maintenance and Logistics Officer and in various command and staff assignments within the Tennessee Army National Guard.  Most recently, Brig. Gen. Baker served as the J-4 for Joint Force Headquarters-Tennessee.  As the J-4, Brig. Gen. Baker was responsible for the Logistics and Maintenance operations for the Tennessee Army and Air National Guard.

 

Brig. Gen. Baker was commissioned in 1985 from Tennessee Military Academy and is a 1995 graduate of the University of Tennessee-Martin with a Bachelor's Degree in Public Administration. He received his Masters Degree in Business Administration Military Management from Touro University, and is a 2011 graduate of the United States Army War College with a Masters in Strategic Studies.

 

 

He deployed to Kuwait in 2004 as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom III serving as the Theater Combat Service Support Automation Management Officer, and again in 2008 as the Commander of the 30th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion at Q-West, Iraq.

 

His awards include the Bronze Star, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Achievement Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and the Combat Action Badge.

Brigadier General Mark Hart, is the Director of the Joint Staff, Tennessee National Guard.

 

In this capacity, Brig. Gen. Hart reports directly to the Adjutant General for Joint Force matters and assists in the external affairs functions including: presenting and enforcing National Guard policies, plans, and programs. The Director of the Joint Staff presides over the National Guard Staff and represents Army and Air capabilities, requirements, policy, plans, and programs in joint operations.  Under the authority of the Adjutant General, the Director of the Joint Staff also designates personnel and resources.

 

Before his assignment as the Director of the Joint Staff, Hart served as the commander of the 230th Sustainment Brigade in Chattanooga. He commanded the Brigade during its 2011 deployment to Kuwait in support of Operation New Dawn. Hart previously commanded the 1st Squadron, 278th Armored Cavalry Regiment during its deployment to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom III in 2004.

Brig. Gen. Hart attended Walters State Community College and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Education from the University of Tennessee in 1990. He received his Master of Science degree in 1999 from the University of Tennessee. He was commissioned Field Artillery from Tennessee Military Academy (OCS) in 1983. His military education includes the Field Artillery Officer Basic Course Fort Sill, OK in 1985, the Armor Advanced Course Fort Knox, KY 1994, Command and General Staff College Fort Leavenworth, KS 2002 and the U. S. Army War College in 2012 .

Brigadier General Thomas J. Kennett is the Chief of Staff-Air for the Tennessee Joint Force Headquarters, Nashville, TN. He plans and formulates executive support functions for the Adjutant General and Assistant Adjutant General-Air on all ANG issues as well as represents the Tennessee National Guard in their absence. He provides oversight to three ANG flying wings and three non-flying units comprised of 1090 Full-Time and 3431 Part Time personnel. Brig Gen Kennett directs and implements the policies of senior USAF, ANG, and State leadership, conveying command intent to the field.

 

Before his appointment as the Chief of Staff-Air, Brig Gen Kennett served as the Vice Wing Commander for the 164th Airlift Wing in Memphis, Tennessee. As the Vice Commander, he was responsible for providing oversight and direction to the Wing, comprised of approximately 1000 personnel, with over 300 military civil service and civilian employees.

Brig Gen Kennett received his commission in January 1987 as a graduate of the Officer Training School at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas and received his pilot training from Laughlin Air Force Base, Texas, in December 1987. He is a command pilot with over 5,000 flying hours in: T-38, KC-135A, KC-135R, KC-135RT, C-17, C-5, C-141, MD-11 & Boeing 727 Aircraft. Brig Gen Kennett served in an activated status for 12 months during Operation Enduring Freedom and was the ANG Advisor to the Commander, Air Mobility Command. In addition, he is an MD-11 Captain for FedEx.

BG (TN) Craig Johnson, Tennessee State Guard

Commanding General Tennessee State Guard

Brigadier General Craig Johnson is the Commanding General, Tennessee State Guard. He is responsible for the operation, training, and readiness for this organization that has four regiments each located in Nashville, Memphis, Knoxville, and Chattanooga.

 

Prior to assuming command of the all volunteer force, Brig. Gen. Johnson served with distinction for over 30 years in the Tennessee Army National Guard. In his last assignment he served as Commander, 194th Engineer Brigade, headquartered in Jackson, Tenn.

 

Brig. Gen. Johnson holds a Bachelor's degree from Middle Tennessee State University, a Masters of Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College, and a Doctor of Jurisprudence from the University of Tennessee School of Law. He is a licensed attorney and has been a Circuit Judge in the 14th Judicial District of the State of Tennessee since 1998, where he presides over criminal felony trials and civil jury trials. He is also a graduate of the National Judicial Academy in Reno, Nevada and the Administrative Office of the Courts Tennessee Judicial Academy.

 

The Tennessee State Guard is the all-volunteer arm of the Tennessee Military Department and is headquartered in Nashville. It consists of approximately 500 personnel and is authorized by Tennessee Code Annotated 58 1-401.

 

 

 

COL Byron Deel, Chief of the Joint Staff

Colonel Byron Deel is the Chief of the Joint Staff, Tennessee National Guard.  He is responsible for the manning, training, and supervision for the Soldiers and Airmen assigned to the Adaptive Battle Staff.  In the event of catastrophic disasters within the state, the Battle Staff is charged with the responsibility of providing directed response to civilian organizations.

 

COL Deel enlisted in Company A, 473rd Support Battalion of the 30th Armored Brigade of the Tennessee Army National Guard in 1985.  Prior to that time he had received his Bachelors Degree from Welch College in 1981 and his Masters Degree from Middle Tennessee State University in 1983.  COL Deel was commissioned Adjutant General Branch from Tennessee Military Academy (OCS) in 1987.  His military education includes the Adjutant General Basic Course Fort Jackson, SC 1988, Master Fitness Trainer Course Fort Benning, GA 1992, Armored Officer Basic Course Fort Knox, KY 1993, Adjutant General Advanced Course Fort Jackson, SC 1998, Captains Career Course Fort Leavenworth, KS 1998, and Command, General Staff College Fort Dix, NJ 2002, and Military Police Transition Course Fort Leonard Wood, MO 2009.

 

Deel has served stateside as Company Commander of the 173rd Personnel Support Company, Operations Officer of the 130th Rear Area Operations Center, Executive Officer of the 105th Personnel Battalion, Assistant Professor of Military Science at Middle Tennessee State University, Commander of the Joint Counterdrug Task Force, Commander of the 117th Military Police Battalion, Executive Officer for 30th Troop Command and the state Active Guard and Reserve Manager.

 

COL Deel was deployed to Bosnia in 2001 as the Deputy Political Advisor for the 29th Infantry Division in support of Operation Joint Forge.  He was responsible for supporting the State Department representatives with intelligence, military liaison and security.  He was deployed to Afghanistan in 2005 as an Embedded Team Trainer as part of the 196th Field Artillery Brigade in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.  He served as a mentor in Intelligence and Operations to the staff of an Infantry Battalion of the Afghan National Army.

His awards include the Bronze Star, The Meritorious Service Medal (8 OLC), Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, NATO Medal, Parachutist Badge, Tennessee National Guard Distinguished Service Medal and the Tennessee National Guard Counterdrug Service Ribbon.

COL Jimmie L. Cole, Jr., Chief of Staff, Army

Colonel Jimmie L. Cole, Jr. was assigned to serve as Tennessee’s Chief of Staff on 13 June 2016. He serves as the Adjutant General’s principle executive assistant and advisor, exercising executive management authority for direction, coordination, supervision, and training of the staff, while directing the efforts of coordinating and special staff officers.

 

Before his assignment,Colonel Cole served as the G3,Deputy Chief of Staff,Operations and Training; G8, Director of Property and Fiscal Operations; Deputy G4, Deputy Director for Logistics; and Deputy G3, Training Division Chief for the Joint Forces Headquarters, Tennessee.

 

Colonel Cole is a native of Baton Rouge,Louisiana,and currently resides in Mt Juliet, Tennessee.  After serving as an enlisted Infantryman, he was commissioned an Air Defense Artillery Officer in the

U.S. Army in 1991 through Officer Candidate School, Ft Benning, Georgia. Upon completion of the Air Defense Artillery Officer Basic Course at Fort Bliss,Texas,he was assigned to 2-44 ADA, 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, as a Vulcan/Stinger Platoon Leader.

 

After his first assignment, Colonel Cole led the Division's only pure Stinger Platoon. Upon completion, Colonel Cole transitioned to the Finance Branch where he served as Battalion Assistant S-3 and the Commander of Detachment B, 101st Finance Battalion.

 

Upon leaving active duty in 1995, Colonel Cole joined the Tennessee Army National Guard where he served in various command and staff positions to include; Commander 1129th Finance, G3 Training Officer, S-3 30th Finance (mobilized), Commander Regimental Reconnaissance 278th Armored Cavalry Regiment(mobilized/deployed), Plans Officer 278th Armored Cavalry Regiment, Commander First Squadron 278th Armored Cavalry Regiment (mobilized/deployed).

EDUCATION:

Colonel Cole is a graduate of the Air Defense Artillery Officer Basic, Finance Advanced Course, Airborne, Air Assault, Scout Commander Course, Combined Arms and Services Staff School, Command and General Staff Course, and Infantry Pre Command Course. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from Louisiana State University and is a graduate of the United States  War College at Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania, where he received his Master’s Degree in Strategic Studies.

Director of Staff, Air

Colonel David W. Dockery is currently the Director of Staff-Air for the Tennessee Joint Force Headquarters, Nashville, TN.  He plans and formulates executive support functions for the Adjutant General and Assistant Adjutant General-Air on all ANG issues and requirements as well as representing the National Guard in their absence. He provides oversight to three ANG flying wings and three non-flying units comprised of 1090 FT/3431 PT personnel. Directs and implements the policies of senior USAF, ANG, and State leadership, conveying command intent to the field. Col Dockery serves as senior manager for the Recruiting and Retention function for the TN ANG ensuring staffing meets end strength goals.

 

Colonel Dockery received his commission in April 1991 as a graduate of Academy of Military Science. After completing undergraduate navigator training, he transitioned to the KC-135E, assigned to the 151st Air Refueling Squadron, McGhee-Tyson ANGB, TN. During this assignment, Colonel Dockery flew missions in in support of Coalition ground forces in Allied Force and enforced no fly zones in both Northern and Southern Watch.

Prior to his current assignment, Colonel Dockery was the Deputy Director/Acting-Director, Plans and Programs (NGB A8A9) at the National Guard Bureau. He was responsible for the strategic planning and programming processes affecting more than 108,000 Guard members, 88 flying wings and 175 geographically separated units throughout the 50 States and territories. While assigned to NGB A8A9, he also served as Chief, Strategy and Force Planning Division. He also served as Deputy Director, Civil Support, Office of Assistant Secretary Defense/Homeland Defense at the Pentagon, Washington, DC. Responsible for identification of critical goals and concepts in the analytic agenda, policy, and strategic guidance, was a core member of President-directed National Homeland Security Plan and was a key contributor to the presidentially directed Integrated Planning System. Prior to OSD, Colonel Dockery was assigned to US Northern Command as a Strategic Concepts and Interagency Affairs Officer/ Legislative Liaison Officer, he represented the Commander and Staffs of USNORTHCOM and NORAD in the National Capital Region. He provided liaison to the Interagency, Congress, OSD, Joint Staff, National Guard Bureau (NGB), Army Corp of Engineers, and Joint Forces Command for Transformation. His staff experience also includes Chief, Air/Land/Maritime Branch (J35), Chief, Operations Exercise Branch (J37) and Chief, Deployments Branch (A3); these duties included program manager for a multi-million dollar foreign military sales contract with NATO for air refueling and program manager for ANG personnel on Weapons of Mass Destruction Civil Support Teams.

Chief Warrant Officer Five Robert V. “RV” Davis was appointed Tennessee’s 4th Command Chief Warrant Officer on December 1, 2011. CW5 Davis serves as the principal Warrant Officer advisor to The Adjutant General and Assistant Adjutant General Army for the supervision, training and wellbeing of Tennessee Army National Guard Warrant Officers. Before his appointment CW5 Davis served as the 101st Airborne Afghan Development Section’s Fusion Chief at Bagram, Afghanistan and post deployment was detailed to Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations J3 Tennessee National Guard with a focus on Domestic Operations.

 

CW5 Davis joined the United States Marine Corps in 1980 and served as a Marine Corps Rifleman

“Infantry”. He joined the Tennessee Army National Guard in 1984 and was assigned to the Headquarters and Headquarters Troop 2/278th Armored Cavalry Regiment as a Cavalry Scout. In 1986 he was transferred to the Regimental Headquarters of the 278th Armored Cavalry Regiment as the Property Accounting NCO. CW5 Davis was appointed a Warrant Officer in the Tennessee Army National Guard in 1988. He is qualified as both a Property Accounting Technician and All Source Intelligence Technician.

Since CW5 Davis’ commissioning he has served in numerous positions within the Tennessee Army National Guard. They include: Property Book Officer 278th ACR (Knoxville), S2 Intelligence Officer Support Squadron 278th ACR (Knoxville), Nuclear Biological and Chemical Warfare Officer Support Squadron 278th ACR (Knoxville), Analysis and Control Element Chief 278th ACR (FOB Caldwell, Iraq), and ADS Fusion Chief, Joint Forces Headquarters Forward 75

Command Sergeant Major Terry J. Scott is the Senior Enlisted Leader (SEL) for the Tennessee National Guard. In this position, he is responsible for advising the Adjutant General on all enlisted matters affecting training and utilization, health of the force, and professional development of the more than 14,000 Tennessee National Guard Soldiers and Airmen.

 

CSM Scott joined the United States Navy in 1977 attending IET, Basic Electricity and Electronics School (San Diego, CA), Electricians Mate “A” School (Great Lakes, IL), Nuclear Power School (Orlando, FL), and Nuclear Power Training Unit (Ballston Spa, NY). Upon completion of service schools, CSM Scott was assigned to the USS Los Angeles (SSN 688) in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii where he qualified in submarines (SS) and made 2 Western Pacific/Indian Ocean deployments. CSM Scott was reassigned to the new construction submarine, The USS City of Corpus Christi (SSN 705), with a follow-on tour as an instructor at the S8G Trident Nuclear Submarine Prototype in Ballston Spa, NY.

 

CSM Scott enlisted as a Cavalry Scout with K/3/278th ACR and began his National Guard career in February of 1987. CSM Scott held various positions in the 278th ACR prior to being selected as an Armor Instructor at the 117th RTI in Smyrna TN. CSM Scott returned to the 278th ACR in 2003 to deploy with 1/278th in support of OIF III and assisted in the transition of 1/278th ACR to the 117th MP BN. Prior to being selected as the Senior Enlisted Leader, CSM Scott was the Command Sergeant Major for the 117th MP BN, 30th Troop Command, and 230th Sustainment Brigade. CSM Scott assumed the duties of the Senior Enlisted Leader on January 1, 2014.

EDUCATION:

CSM Scott received a Master of Arts Degree in Instructional Leadership in 2000, and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Secondary Education in 1992, both from Tennessee Technological University.

CSM Scott is a graduate of the Naval Basic Electricity and Electronic School, Naval Nuclear Power School, Nuclear Power Training Unit, Leadership Management Education and Training School, Primary Leadership Development Course, Basic Non-Commissioned Officers Course, Advanced Non-Commissioned Officers Course, Battle Focused Instructor Training Course, as well as 19D (Cavalry Scout), 19K (Armor Crewman), and 31B (Military Police) Reclassification Courses. Command Sergeant Major Michael Gentry was assigned to serve as Tennessee’s State Command Sergeant Major on 1 October 2015. He represents and advises the Assistant Adjutant General-Army on matters pertaining to policies and actions that affect enlisted Soldiers.

 

Prior to his assignment as the State Command Sergeant Major, Gentry served as the J3/G3 Operations Sergeant Major, the G3 Operations Sergeant Major for 30th Troop Command, Command Sergeant Major for the 168TH MP Battalion, and S3 Operations Sergeant Major for the 168TH MP Battalion.

 

Command Sergeant Major Gentry is a native of Nashville, TN. He currently resides in Rockvale, Tennessee and has three sons. After CSM Gentry's initial enlistment in the United States Marine Corps, he enlisted in the United States Army Reserve. He then joined the Tennessee Air National Guard Security Police Squadron and later moved to the Tennessee Army National Guard.

Command Sergeant Major Gentry has served two tours in Iraq with the 168TH MP BN and one tour in Macadonia/Kosovo with the 130TH RAOC.

CMSgt Mark A. Harris is the Command Chief Master Sergeant of the Tennessee Air National Guard.  As State Command Chief he serves as the senior advisor to the Assistant Adjutant General for Air on quality-of-life issues and concerns for the 3000 plus enlisted members of the Tennessee Air National Guard. His responsibilities also include providing advice and counsel to the Wing and Unit Commanders and Wing Command Chief Master Sergeants on the concerns of the enlisted force. He formally served as the Command Chief master Sergeant 118th Wing, Nashville TN.

 

CMSgt Harris was born in Nashville, Tennessee, and attended Volunteer State Community College prior to enlisting in the Tennessee Air National Guard at Berry Field ANGB in 1988. He was initially assigned as C-130 Crew Chief until selected as a Flight Engineer in 1990.While a traditional Guardsman, he was employed as a heating and air conditioning technician and later as a police officer.  In 2001, he became a full-time Guardsman.  During the C-130 schoolhouse operations, he served as Formal Training Unit (FTU) Flight Engineer Course Manager and additionally as Flight Engineer technician supervisor.  As the Operations Group transitioned from the C-130 to the MQ-9 Reaper, he assumed the role of Group Chief and cross-trained to sensor operator while establishing the foundation and developing personnel for Reaper Operations. In November 2013, Chief Harris was selected as the Wing Command Chief.
