Self-Provisioning Virtual Server

Description

A streamlined ordering method for virtual server(s) has been implemented using the VMWare Service Manager Tool (VSM). Here are the details in Frequently Asked Questions:

What is the purpose of the VMware Service Manager (VSM) tool?
The VSM tool provides AITRs and AITR designees with the ability to request a Windows 2012 virtual server at CESC through the ITSM Service Catalog.

What are the benefits of the VSM tool versus the work request process?
The VSM tool provides a convenient, paperless ordering process and a self-provisioning functionality. This reduces the time needed to provision the server when compared to the current ordering process.

What type of virtual server can be requested using the VSM tool?
Only an application, web, and file server at CESC running on a Windows 2012 OS can be requested through this tool.

Are there any limitations to the type of virtual server that can be ordered?

Yes, see the below list:

  • Only a standard Windows 2012 OS is available. Please use the work request process for requests for Red Hat, SQL, and enterprise OS licenses
  • Only Tier 2 storage at CESC is available as a selection at this time. If you need Tier 1 storage or disaster recovery, please use the work request process
  • Selections are limited to 1 or 2 vCPUs per server
  • One core per vCPU is provided

More contact information

Where can I get help with accessing the self-provision tool?

Contact the VCCC at (866) 637-8482 for access issues with the self-provision tool.

How to order

Can any user access the VSM tool?

No, only an Agency IT Resource (AITR) can access the VSM tool.

How do I access the VMWare Service Management (VSM) tool to place the order?

For AITRs, the tool can be accessed through the VSM customer portal located at the following link:

    VCCC Customer Portal

  1. Log in under   log-in prompt   found in the upper right corner of the screen, using COV credentials.
  2. Under the   Service Catalog   option, click Review Past/current Service Orders
  3. Click   Browse The Service Catalog
  4. Click on the   Order   button beside the icon

For non-AITRs, complete the self-provisioning virtual server user sheet and submit it to your AITR for review and processing. The Self-provisioning Virtual Server User Form is found at the Service Catalog Form Library using the below URL:

VITA IT Service Catalog: Form Library

Will I receive a notification that my order was submitted?

Yes, you will receive notification via email from the VSM tool that will provide you the request number and details of the order. This email will be sent to the AITR and the identified customer/agency point of contact (POC).

How will I know that my server was built?

You will receive another notification via email from the VSM tool to inform you that the server has been provisioned. This email will be sent to the AITR and the identified customer/agency point of contact (POC).

How do I access current and past orders?

    •  Under the     Service Catalog     option

    • Click     Review Past/Current Service Orders

    • Enter the "     Order No     ." or select an option under the     Order State

    • Click on the     "Search"     button

How do I cancel an order?

Once an order has been submitted, contact the VCCC and submit a separate decommission request.

How do I correct an error once the order has been submitted?

    • Incorrect CPU - You may either submit a custom work request or submit a VCCC ticket to decommission the server after it has been provisioned and submit a new order with the desired changes.
    • Incorrect storage (type or amount) - You may either submit a work request after the server has been provisioned or  submit a VCCC ticket to decommission the server after it has been provisioned and submit a new order with the desired changes.
    • Other data (example: POC or server type) - To change the POC or server type, the AITR must submit a service request to the VCCC.  It will be then assigned to the CMDB team to update the CMDB record

How do I decommission a server?

This tool is not used to decommission servers. Even though the tool asks if the server is a replacement for another server, the active service must still be decommissioned via a separate request. Servers are decommissioned by submitting a VCCC ticket or a custom work request depending on the work required to decommission the server.
