The Energy Processes and Materials Division focuses on three mission contributions:
Clean Fossil Energy [+ expand/ - collapse]
EP&MD delivers:
- An integrated set of capabilities and partnerships that significantly accelerate the process of developing and demonstrating affordable emission capture systems for existing power plants,
- A technology base and network that enables and supports the development of cost effective next generation advanced conversion systems that cleanly and efficiently utilize fossil fuels, including coal and biomass, as a source.
EP&MD is leveraging its existing expertise in materials, chemistry, and processing to offer national and international technical leadership in these areas, including expertise in federal, industrial, and international partnerships essential and success.
Electricity Infrastructure [+ expand/ - collapse]
EP&MD delivers:
Innovative energy storage technology that enables increased integration of renewable energy into the grid. These technologies are based on our capabilities in materials synthetics and electrochemical systems.
Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy [+ expand/ - collapse]
EP&MD delivers:
- Advancing vehicle efficiency, vehicle electrification, and fuel cell technology with signature capabilities in materials, catalysis electrochemistry, grid management, techno-economic modeling.
- Accelerating development and deployment of the next generation of bio-based fuels and chemicals— and where applicable, high efficiency power/electricity generation—enabled by unique capabilities in catalysis, biotechnology, process engineering and analysis.
- Development and deployment of renewable sources of electricity—geothermal, and solar—based on capabilities in nanomaterials and microtechnology.
Our expert staff provide multi-disciplinary solutions to complex energy and environmental issues. Key capabilities include science (chemical and mechanical). We employ a systems perspective that includes, discovery technology development and scale-up as well as economic, regulatory, and market acceptance issues necessary for successful technology commercialization.
