International Year of Soils 2015: Healthy Soils for a Healthy Life

Our soils are in danger because of expanding cities, deforestation, unsustainable land use and management practices, pollution, overgrazing and climate change. The current rate of soil degradation threatens the capacity to meet the needs of future generations.  As long as soils are at risk, sustainable agriculture, food security and the provision of ecosystem services are compromised.

State Soil Selected for Montana.

May 2015,  the Montana State legislature has officially designated Scobey, a Region 10 Benchmark soil, as the State Soil!  The effort was led by 4th grade students at Longfellow Elementary in Bozeman.  Thanks to Bill Drummond, Soil Scientist, for testifying on behalf of NRCS in front of the House Ag Committee.  Thanks to Denise Decker, Legislative Affairs Specialist for approving the testimony.  This is a significant accomplishment during the International Year of Soils.  Bozeman students instrumental in new state symbol
