DWR launches new research vessel
The Sentinel launched at the Ballard Ship Canal in Seattle, Washington.The Sentinel, DWR’s new 60-foot, state-of-the-art research vessel, is ready for action. She replaces the San Carlos as DWR’s flagship for gathering water quality data on Bay-Delta waters and sampling for phytoplankton, zooplankton, and benthos. The Sentinel has a 266-square-foot laboratory with the most sophisticated instrumentation available.
The vessel will be used by DWR’s Environmental Monitoring Program, which ensures compliance with state water mandates under Water Rights Decision 1641, and has seen a rise in special study requests, such as the drought’s effect on water quality. The Sentinel will ensure DWR can comply with these mandates, and future challenges, in a safer and more efficient manner.
