Graphical Weather Forecasts
Carin Goodall-Gosnell
National Weather Service, Newport/Morehead
Weather forecasts issued by the National Weather Service provide
customers with detailed predictions of meteorological parameters
significant to day to day living. However, some of these text
products are difficult for the general public to read and interpret.
In an effort to support the National Weather Service's strategic
plan and its goal of providing graphical forecast products,
the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Newport/Morehead
City NC has been creating graphical representations of several
different forecasts.
Graphical weather forecasts of 3 hourly weather out to 60 hours,
and 12 hourly weather out to 7 days are available on our Internet
Homepage. Also available are graphical threats of the day for
various parameters such as dangerous rip currents, dangerous
thunderstorms, winter weather, etc. Marine threats to boaters,
such as Small Craft Advisories, Storm Warnings, Hurricane Warnings,
etc, are displayed graphically on our homepage.
Although these forecasts are graphical in nature, they are also
Section 508 compliant. The programs that create these graphics
run locally, and are available to all National Weather Service
field office. This presentation will show the available graphical
forecasts, and discuss future plans for more graphical weather
forecasts. It will also demonstrate Section 508 compliancy.
